Cedar Point announces Dragster!

You want proof that Cedar Point is only concerned with a defined marketing area? Look no further than the Getaway Guides. They don't send them to people in California, Florida, Texas, etc.

The send them to the Michigan, Indiana, Kentucy, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, area etc.

Jeff is correct.

Someone call Guiness, and get Superman the Escape out of there... now it does not matter if it is a coaster or not.. even though it is not.. hehe

Just the track, the wind, and the speed.

I'm sure that people come to Cedar Point from all accross America & probablay some people from come other countries BUT I have to agree with Jeff. Just look @ all the Meechigan,Indiana,Pennsylvania, New York & of course Ohio license plates. I also heard about the regional marketing thing too... I live by the philosphy "It is what it is" I think that you might just be trying to make it more than "it is"... Anyway, I can't watch the video on my slow work computer (so I'll see it later) "Can anyone explain the 6 trains on the track thing ??? "how will it work"? Is that realistically possibile for such a fast ride ??? just curious.... counting down the days to 5-4-03 *P.S. I though the name was a lil' odd @ first BUT after looking at the trains (Dragster) & the Top Fuel Dragster play on words - IT ROCKS !!!

Being a drag racing fan, I'm completely thrilled with the name, trains and themeing!! Told my husband this morning there is no need to go to Norwalk now.

No reason to go to Norwalk???? Are you crazy??? ;) Gotta have something to do when I'm not at the park.

I'm excited to ride, can't wait until May...

2002 25 minute MF rides: 1
2002 45 minute waits on Raptor platform w/o riding: 1
2002 trips to the point: not near enough
2002 Raptor Crew??? Oh yeah, you know it...

Yeah, that's pretty much what my husband said. Stand in line to ride Dragster? Or wait in the staging area to race his Lightning. So, like last year, we'll spend Wednesday nights racing at Norwalk, and Thursday at CP.

Did anyone else notice in the promo video that the announcer used the phrase "hot drag racing action"?

I'm picturing a bunch of marketers sitting around a table and think that's a good phrase to use -- "hmm... how about 'hot drag racing action'?" :)

Cracks me up. :)

I lived in Jacksonville, FL from early 1999 through late 2001 and got a Getaway Guide in the mail every year. I visited the park each of those years and was a resort guest each of those years. Kind of seems silly to ignore a segment of guests by refusing to send them promotional material.

I'm not saying your wrong, but I got them in Florida and they got my $$$ because of it.

But you didn't get a mass mailing in Florida. My guess is that you called and requested one, which is fine. My point is that they are not doing publicity or marketing to try to lure Floridians to Cedar Point like Disney does publicity and marketing to lure Ohioans to Orlando.
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks CP. I sure hope I can save enough money to make the trip from North Carolina. Sure wish I still lived in Ohio. :)
The only thing I fear is that I might not be able to ride with my glasses on (even with a strap). Without them nothing ever seems the same.

If CedarPoint wasn't competing with and for the world, it would be Ohio's roller coast. I understand that the parks main base of guests is a handful of northern states and a small portion of canada, but CedarPoint is for the world to experience!

If you build it, they will come!

What? Let me say this s-l-o-w-l-y. Cedar Point does not build a new ride like Dragster to try and convince people from California of Florida or overseas to come to the park.

If people from overseas or whatever DO come to the park, great! That is a fringe benefit. Cedar Point is concerned with the people in the 5 or 6 state area and bringing those people to Cedar Point instead of them going to King's Island, Six Flags Geauga, etc.

If they had not added a ride since Magnum since 1989 do you think that 3.25 million guests would have gone to Cedar Point last summer? Of course not. They need to top THEMSELVES to keep people coming back.

If anything, Cedar Point is in competition with its own reputation.

One other thing..."If you build it, they will come" does not apply to the amusement park business. Just ask the folks to the east.

Oh, I see. I wasn't aware that they did mass mailings locally. Understood. I never got a mass mailing in western PA (pittsburgh area) either. sigh...

But we never requested them, I believe they're most likely sent to the previous year's resort guests also.

I've said it a thousand times, most Ohioans don't even know or care that SFMM exists. Ditto for SoCal folks regarding Cedar Point.

Jeff -
How right you are. There was a guy from SoCal at work today installing some equipment for us, and we were talking about coasters. Of course the new coaster came up and he said "Isn't Cedar Point owned by Six Flags?"

"E"

Yeah, it's called Cedar Point: Six Flags over Lake Erie....

You'd better believe it does. If you want good attendance, you must provide a new attraction of some sort that's actually good. If you follow the figures on a year to year basis and keep track of what new stuff that particular park gets, the trend is obvious. People won't go to a park if they've already done everything that's there 4 or 5 times without a new attraction of some sort.

PS: I live in the East and do keep tabs on this stuff.
area, what I am referring to is the mentality that has got Six Flags Geauga (and many of the other Six Flags parks) as screwed up as they have become.

The powers that be at Premier (owners of Six Flags) think that "if they build it, they will come". What they seem to be missing is that you must also maintain it, clean it, staff it, run it efficently, etc.

Cedar Point knows that you have to do a lot more than build it to get people there and keep them coming back.

BTW, I was right on the height and drop (420 and 400). I missed the speed 120 (I said 117).

BTW - In the old "Face the Facts" thread, it turns out that I was the one that it got it ALL correct (420/400/120). So nice to know that Jeff was talking about me when he posted what now shows in my signature.

Jdubya - I know we butted heads at one point in time regarding the height of Dragster. Now that the facts are on the table, I guess we are even. I owe you an ice cream cone from one of the very early "height" threads because the 420' actual height IS closer to your 450' than my original 380' estimate. However, in the "Face the Facts" thread, you suggested that everyone send the winner a buck. Go ahead and take your buck and buy yourself an ice cream cone and enjoy it while you are waiting in line for Dragster.
