Cedar Point 2012

Did they used to have a live show in the gazebo or am I getting my wires crossed with another park?

You're missing the point entirely.

No I'm not. I've said multiple times and even in the post you quoted that it's no secret about the lack of family attractions. The general consensus among enthusiasts (and not the general public) is that removing the petting farm is going to cause some drop in attendance. Logic dictates that won't happen. Logic dictates that Cedar Point's attendance is not driven by White Water Landing, Dolphin Shows, Jungle Larry and a Steam Boat on a track or even the shows. It's a nice change of pace in an otherwise crowded and thrilling day, but in the end, it's not what the majority of people come to the park for.

Cedar Point is a business and despite what some of you may think, the petting zoo does not make or break decisions the park makes.

I think you need to rethink your argument. Sure the petting zoo may not be big in your eyes. I don't think its big in many peoples eyes. The zoo is just a distraction. A place where you can take a break from lines and rides for a little bit and do something different. It's just a little thing. But sometimes its the little things that make a park great. Little things like the zoo, while not big and dramatic like MF and Maverick, and charm to a park. The dolphin show did the same thing. You can have a park with rides. But if you have little things like a petting zoo, dolphin show, family flume, in addition to other things, you'll have a unique park with a lot of variety.

Now I think CP has done a pretty good job starting a trend towards family attractions recently. Starlight is a fun little addition. And I like what they did with OM. But, there's still so much to do in terms of family attractions. PWE, is in pretty bad shape and needs to be upgraded. The train could use some sprucing up. A dark ride would be amazing too. Bottom line, they need more attractions for the family. Getting rid of the zoo doesn't help. It would be CP just getting rid of one more family attraction. Like I said, its not a hero, headline attraction. But it serves a purpose as a nice little side attraction that people can see.

With everything everyone says, it makes me wish I was older. When I could get to ride the Pirate Ride and everything you're talki about. As I'm a teenager.

While I love the coasters personally, CP is missing out on a fairly sizable group of people that probably no longer come to the park. In the 80's, with the musical shows, IMAX, Jungle Larry, the dolphin show and all the crafts demonstrations on the Frontier Trail, you could actually have a full day at the park without ever going on a ride.

Amen. I don't know if it's possible, but thought it would be cool to build a new dark ride, with the main show building inside Mean Streak. - The inside of the coaster where other ride cars are stored. Just wishful thinking.

On the other hand, think about all the cool and amazing things you'll get to see happen at the park decades from now that some of us old fogies won't ever get the chance to witness... :)

In semi-recent times (around 1999) they had some musicians at the gazebo for HalloWeekends like the Ghoul Tones. I always thought that would be a good place for a piano player like Casey's Corner at Magic Kingdom.

Same here. I'm just 17. I can't really remember any of the older rides from when I was younger. I slightly remember White Water Landing. It was a fun ride.

For being 17, SSL488 (isn't it funny how we call each other by our member names here?), you have some rather mature perspective. Just observing your reactions to some posts, you seem to have the rare ability to disagree with respect.

This has crossed my mind while strolling around Camp Snoopy with my daughter. To Kylah, Dragster has always been around, and Millenium Force is that big blue coaster that has been at Cedar Point forever...

What will those little eyes be looking at when we're gone?

Let;s just hope Kinzel actually retires by then. I can forsee some type of Robocop 2 brain/spinal cord contraption keeping him around. Or maybe more like General Grievous.

Oh my. I feel old, and I'm 21. I need to go do something immature and reckless.

Pete, the venue you speak of was an out door amphitheater. You can see it's location on this park guide. It look slike it was where Skyhawk is now. There is a description of the show at the amphitheater for 1971 in this brochure.

Since people have been discussing Frontier Trail, here is an original frontier trail map that they used to hand out.

Frontier Trail Brochure: Link 1 and Link 2

The ampitheather was located where Snake River Falls is now.

Well thank you very much! Although I have to be honest, when I disagree with my parents, I don't do it very respectfully... but that is a whole different topic...

^ Wicked Twister 90, you bring up really good valid points! I feel like Cedar Point replaced a good water flume with White Water Landing by bringing in Shoot the Rapids. From what I've heard, it has mixed reviews, but it's a great family addition for people that don't want to get completely drenched. I think your right too with the Petting zoo that you were talking about. Removing that would lose the charm in that area of the park. I'm also in favor of keeping that there as I said similar in another page.

One thing I have always wanted was a one-price admission to both Cedar Point and Soak City. More and more parks, it seems, are doing this, and I think CP could benefit from this. Soak City is hardly anything, in water park standards, and the admission prices could actually reflect it's cost by giving you more bang for your buck. Talk about family attractions!

I'm about ready to take off in a couple of minutes for a weekend trip that includes Holiday World on Sunday. I'm amped, of course, for that incredible trio of killer coasters, but I wouldn't be enduring what amounts to around 14 hours of driving over the weekend if that's all they had to offer. We're looking forward to all of the little stuff there that makes us smile and reminds us, to be blunt, that theme parks don't necessarily have to conform to the Cedar Fair/Six Flags-type model.

I told some friends about my trip and where I was going, and the thing that piqued their interest in going to Holiday World in the future wasn't the coasters, but things such as the fact that an entire area of the park is so fully dedicated to the concept of Thanksgiving.

I'd suggest that the Cedar Point Uber Alles crowd visit some of these smaller independent parks, and then really think about what you enjoyed. I'm betting that it will be more than just the coasters.

The path you tread is narrow, and the drop is sheer and very high.

To be fair, I don't think most of us here are German... ;)

Break Trims, what truly opened my eyes was when I made my first trip to Busch Gardens Williamsburg, and then Dollywood later on.

However, there is some give and take with these parks as well. It didn't just open my eyes to how well the "little things" can be done, but it also exposed the grandeur of Cedar Point. Aside from Magic Mountain and, to some extent, Great Adventure, the amount and level of thrills at Cedar Point is unmatched. Not even close.

My contention is that Cedar Point currently has a collection of coasters and thrill rides that is so top-tier, there is relatively little need to add to this collection. What would, in my opinion, truly put Cedar Point over-the-top would be to now put the prime focus on beautification, family-oriented attractions (including improving what is already there), and those little touches that Cedar Point has lost over the years.

Exactly. Small things like pavers, plants, trees, water features would do so much. In terms of family attractions, I'd love to see something like Curse of DarKastle or some kind of dark ride. An indoor family coaster wouldnt be bad either, since I feel DT is coming down in the near future. .

They've got the two day ride & slide tickets which aren't very expensive. Or at least they used to

Kevinj, you've described my own sentiments perfectly, and far better than I could have myself.

Yeah, I was looking at the webcam the other day and I noticed them.

It also seems like there are more trash cans too.

I heard that there are over 4,000 of them, which I'd believe. You really have no excuse to litter now.
