Bring back the Sky Wheel!

I remember the creaking being around for a long time. Of course, that would be in '93, the first time I rode it, so I guess that is not a long time for some people. But, it is for me. :)

Sorry for restarting this, but what was the sky wheel?

The Sky Wheel? One of these. :)

Even better, here's a page about the Cedar Point Sky Wheel from Walt's site.

It was a double ferris wheel.

Hmm. Will paint fix the wierd creaking sound the ride makes when the arms are raised up? It is showing it's age. I know maintenance is awesome, but the creaking is wierd. I don't remember it in the past.

I remember it from when it was first installed, 1977 I think, and it always made that noise. That's just how it runs.

Florida may have Disneyworld and Key West,
but Ohio has Cedar Point and Put-In-Bay.

Having been fortunate to have set-up and torn down a few Sky Wheels in my time, I sadly have to say that it is a ride whose time has come to pass. The ride itself requires a ton of daily maintenance and parts are hard to come by these days. In my former career in the carnival industry, it was truly the king of the midway. There was not a single ride more challenging and intriguing to work on than that ride in my opinion. I always thought of it as a large Erector set myself. Coming over the top of the rim was always a gut wrencher!

Fun ride, but not built very good. I helped build one at a local fair for some extra green a few years back, and lets just say that there is not much holding that thing together.

I will never forget watching the skywheel on a windy day.....you can actualy see it move..back and forth.

I say if they are going to bring back any ride, bring back the pirat ride.

What made the sky wheel so scary?

Because of the motion of both wheels in a unit, when you were at the top, you got the combined speed of the entire unit, plus the wheel you were in. Also, the geometry of the motion made for a pretty much vertical drop with some good speed, when your seat was at the top. The Sky Wheel was the only Ferris Wheel ride that I can think of that was a thrill ride.
