Bring Back Oceana

Stryker and Coco died a week apart during the 1996 season. The show continued for the remainder of 1996 and all of 1997. Misty then passed away during the winter of 1998 and Cedar Point announced the end of Oceana. Breeze retired to the Dolphin Research Center in the Florida Keys.

Came across this video today and was happy to see the dolphins from the past. I forgot how green the tank was :(

It looks like they are swimming in ecto cooler.

And now I want ecto cooler, it would go really great with some Planters Cheeze Balls. *SIGH*

This is the video I was hoping it was, at 9:05 in this video is a much younger version of me. I guess my days of being in Cedar Point media started young.

Thanks for posting that! It's amazing what has changed.

Enjoy the rest of your day at America's Rockin' Roller Coast! Ride On!

That was great to watch.

It really is amazing to ponder how many huge...and by any park's standards I mean huge...installations there have been at Cedar Point starting with Magnum.

Any one of the coasters installed from Magnum on could still, to this day, be the "main bad-boy" draw at so many parks around the entire globe.

I wouldn't want Woodstock Express to be the main bad boy draw at any park. ;)

Well maybe Idlewild. :)

Was the tank really that green or is that just the color?

OK, here's a question from my hippocampus, which is a memory I might just be making up.

In the IMAX theater, was there a seal show (like a pre-show) to the film? It's a fuzzy, grainy memory.

I don't know anything a seal show, but I do know they had a pre-show that was a group using trash cans and old ride signs as instruments. For the life of me I can't remember the name and I just saw it the other day.

That might have been Crash Boom Bang!, one of the Stomp-esque shows that played in the Cinema Showcase in the late '90s/early '00s.

Hmm. Well I'm talking about a 1982 - 1986 timeframe here, so we may have to all climb aboard the way-back machine.

They did have a pre-show during that time frame Kevin. Usually some type of variety live entertainment - some music, some jokes and some audience participation. The Imax theater was very popular back then and the pre-show served as a queue for the main theater. The crowded came in and sat down in the pre-show arena. After the show, the entire audience entered the theater as a group. It allowed them to seat the entire theater very quickly and start the movie promptly.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

Exactly! The doors would open for the theater after the "pre show" and in you went into your row. And it was always, always packed.

I remember loving the pre-show as a kid, and for some reason my brain has placed seals doing funny tricks in there. :) Maybe now I'm mixing the old Aurora Sea World with Cedar Point.

Whatever it was, it was funny...at least to 6 year old me.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but it is the off season :)

I would love the park to add an aquarium style attraction. Please read carefully- no dolphin shows, no orcas, etc. But aquariums have done extremely well in various markets recently (Georgia Aquarium, Ripley's Aquarium, the new Sealife Aquarium Orlando, etc). I understand that it's not a "record-breaking" steel monster, but we really need to start seeing some major capital spent on things besides dinosaurs and steel coasters.

The Midwest really doesn't have an aquarium, and I believe that adding one to the park would really round out its current offering. Again, no animal shows, but exotic fish, stingrays, etc. It would be an excellent, family-friendly attraction.

Perhaps I'm having a crazy day, or I'm a little melancholy after reading the below article:

Cedar Point did have a small aquarium, Sealand (later made part of the Oceana complex), from 1970 to 2001.

The midwest does have aquariums (Toledo, Cleveland and Columbus all have either free-standing aquariums or zoos that incorporate aquariums). The aquariums you mentioned are much larger in size and generally located in areas with year round tourist traffic.

The idea is appealing, but I don't know that an aquarium of that scale that would be closed as many months as it's open would be the best fit for the park.

Then your imagination kinda sucks. While it likely wouldn't be expensive to revamp the stadium, acquiring the marine animals to perform in such a show would not be inexpensive.

Acquiring new marine life animals would be inexpensive compared to a new ride like gatekeeper.

I'd much rather ride Gatekeeper than watch fish swim.

The Midwest really doesn't have an aquarium,

The Toledo Zoo just spent $25+ million to renovate their aquarium. There's an aquarium in Newport, KY, just across the river from Cincinnati that's nice. And the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago was once the largest indoor aquarium in the world with over 5 million gallons of water.

I see no reason to build an aquarium or any other type of live animal attraction at Cedar Point outside of the petting zoo. An aquarium that's worth noting would most likely cost the same as a large ride if not more in initial costs, and would be more expensive in maintenance. Cedar Fair already employs skilled people when it comes to rides, but would have to hire or rely upon contractors to take care and maintain an animal based exhibit.

Let the animals stay with the Zoos who have experts to take care of them.
