Boardwalk?

I know this is supposed to be a thread related to the "boardwalk project", but I have to ask - why, oh why, are so many people obsessed with floorless coasters? I mean, Medusa is a good ride and all, but the "floorless" aspect has little (or nothing) to do with it. But then, I've never really been a big fan of sit-down loopers. In fact, most of the truly awful coasters out there fall into that category, and changing to floorless trains wouldn't help any of 'em...

Spewey,

Just to touch on what you just said, I've ridden Medusa quite a few times (was a passholder last year, despite living in CT) and agree the floorless aspect is kind of a take it or leave it thing ... That is, until you ride in the front. From there, the floorless aspect makes a HUUUUUUUGE difference, and makes it one of the most amazing rides I've ever been on. Admittedly, building a ride a certain way just for the benefit of the front seat is a little silly, but all those extra waits were well worth it for me. Add an extra 45 minutes of wait time, but I would never ride anywhere else again.
I thought Medusa was simply AMAZING. The floorless design is a bit gimicky, but it's neat. I found the ride to feel LESS constraining than any inverted I've been on. I'm really looking forward to Batman Knight Flight at Six Flags Ohio (GASP!), and I really hope Cedar Point decides to make one of these their 3rd B&M.

CP didn't put in the first inverted, or the first standup, so the fact that the floorless design has already been placed in parks isn't a deterrent (the fact that one's going in so close to them might be, though).

As for the boardwalk project, I REALLY hope this comes to pass. I think it would be an EXCELLENT use for a comparatively neglected area of the park. Especially if they put a Cyclone or a CCI wooden in there (Coney Island's Cyclone is still my favorite coaster, bar none... Hmmm, a CCI designed & built, Cyclone-based, woodie to replace Disaster Transport. Yeah, that's it! :-) )

Aren't I mmistaken but doesn't Knott's have a boardwalk area too, where WindJammer is, going down towards the Dinosaur ride? It would make some sense than considering Cedarfair likes to recreate area themes, such as in the case of Camp Snoopy
If Cp does put in a floorless I bet it will be a 200+ ft. LIM launched. This would take care of the Batman comparisons, and would make it the biggest, fastest, first of its kind, etc..
And we all know how Cp loves to capture records when they build something new.

A woodie on boardwalk would "look" great. Then again Mean Streak "looks" great too! Riding woodies is the problem! Cp is the greatest park in the world because of their great steel coasters. Sorry but I'm a steel man, and Cp is a steel park.

Again, I think the new train designs are cool, and I'm all for them, but the ride's the thing, and you could slap a new-fangled train on Steel Phantom or Flashback or PKI's Viper and you still wouldn't get me near them. It just seems to me if we're talking boardwalk we're talking wood. It's not some Batman ride that's gonna be the reason for my first trip to SFOhio (TPFKAGL), it's a little CCI woodie known as the Villain. I mean, I'm looking forward to MF and all, but not any more than The Legend or Boulder Dash or my first ride on Rampage ... I've gotta believe anyone who ever rode Ghostrider would think of nothing else for the next big thrill at CP.

Correction: PKI doens't have a coaster called Viper. That's a Six Flags name. PKI does, however, have a Togo standup called King Cobra.

Maybe its the people I hang around, but nobody I know is all geared up to ride a new woodie. I feel the general public looks at woodies as old hat. Next time your at Cp look at the line size for raptor and magnum. Then check out the line size for Mean Streak and Blue Streak. I think you'll see a big difference.

I gotta believe anyone that has ever rode Superman ride of steel would think of nothing else for Cp! But to each, their own, I guess.

I don't know how many riders Mean Streak has every year, but I think it is fairly popular. GhostRider, Shivering Timbers, Raven, etc. are all very popular with riders. If CP had a ride like GhostRider, you would see the queue lines filled up with eager riders.
I'm not trying to get you woodie lovers mad. Woodies are cool, and I certainly wouldn't cry if Cp got a new CCI. It's just a matter of taste. I've always looked at it this way....Woodies are like taking a tractor full speed over a plowed field....Steelies are like putting a corvette to the floor on curvy country road...Both are very fun, but the vette gives me the bigger rush.

Go to Muskegon and ride Shivering Timbers. And you thought Magnum had air-time...

(BTW, Mean Streak is unpopular because it's painful, not because it's a wooden. BS loses some patronage from it slocation, its new restraints, and that it's a middle-of-the-pack 30 year old coaster. Look at the mine ride...)
ST, you're right - I meant PKI's Vortex, not Viper. All those similar names from all those similar corporate parks run together ...

And, yeah, I love steel coasters too. In fact, the top two coasters on my wife and I's list are steel - Magnum and Appollo's Chariot. And I loved Superman:ROS. It's just that our biggest thrills come from airtime, and a good wooden coaster provides that better than anything else. As far as a tractor plowing a field, I don't know if anyone has ever compared the Raven or GE's Comet or Shivering Timbers to a tractor. TFGM3, if you haven't checked out these babies, they may change your mind. (Of course, I used to urge people to try Americana's wooden-heart-attack of a roller coaster, the Screehin' Eagle, on for size, but I guess I can't do that anymore (sniff).

I was thinking of Mean Streak When I said tractor..LOL. If we are talking about Shivering Timbers I would change that to Hummer. I was dragged to MA this past summer by a bud of mine (who is a huge woodie fan) To ride Shivering Timbers. I will admit it caused me to be far less cynical of what a woodie is capable of. It's the first CCI I've rode so far and I was very impressed. It is the best woodie that I have ever rode, I'll give you that. If CP put in a CCI I would be in line right with you guys, I'm not going to lie.

When I was at MA it was easy to see that Shivering Timbers is the most popular ride in the park. But on the other hand MA, (like knotts, IB,) have no hyper or B&M of any kind, so it's hard to say if that would hold true at CP. It would be in the top 5 at Cp for sure though.

Now back to boardwalk. Or the lack of it. Some were saying they would rather have a CCI than a B&M, and this is where my main difference of opinion comes into play. If I had to choose beteewn a custom 140 ft. CCI, and a custom 250 ft. LIM lauched, floorless B&M....I still got to go with the B&M.

In 1970, Blue Streak was the first coaster I ever rode. It remained my favorite coaster for over 2 decades, and is still a sentimental favorate. For 21 long years all I ever wanted was a new big woodie at CP. Finally in 1991 the coaster of my dreams (I thought) was built. Mean Streak. Hell, they even named it after my favorite coaster! I was in heaven. Then...I rode it. It was a crushing disappointment. Yes I know Dinn built it and his daughter now owns CCI, but I never blamed Dinn (the builder), I blamed Summers (the designer). There seemed to be a rash of bad woodies built all over the country from 1979 to 1991. Most of them being Summers designs. This caused me to have a distrust for "newer" woodies along with a unbridled hatred towards Summers.

Now that CCI is around I am slowly, but surely coming back around to the woodie scene.
