B&M Coasters

Why are B&M Coasters always so loud? I noticed this over the summer when I was standing in line for The Raptor, The Mantis, Top Gun, and Super Man. Then i was in line for some other popular coaster such as Magnum and viper.
well for one thing they are alot bigger then magnum. Look at the track and cars of raptor and mantis and compare it to magnum. I dunno.

I'm fairly sure the "roar" comes from the vibration in the box supports of the track. If you were to fill the supports with sand like on Dueling Dragons at Islands of Adventure the roar is greatly diminished.
Yea, that works too, or at BGW, they used polyurithane instead of the regular nylon wheels found on most B&M's. I for one like the roar you hear when you are waiting in line for coasters like Mantis, Raptor, or especially Medusa @ SFGAd.

I don't like that roar standing in line for Mantis because when I'm talking to someone, I have to pause about one every 2-3 minutes as the train goes screaming past us.

Also consider that wheels make constant contact on three sides with what appears to be a harder substance than what you'd find on an Arrow coaster (not sure... never touched B&M wheels before, only Arrow). If there are five wheels per side per car (two road, two side and one up-stop), that makes 80 wheels per train all making contact at once.

And yes, I'm sure the track structure has something to do with it.

I agree with MDOmnis what thewheels are made of. I wonder if the MF will be a load coaster?
Jeff, try counting again. B&M use double upstop wheels, so you're off by 16. And Mantis:TCFKAB has an extra set for the lead car, so it has 108 wheels, while Raptor only has 96. :)

Or like it said on the Discovery Channel, they are designed to be loud to attract attention from areas the coaster is not visible from. Superman at SFMM is the same way.

I actully enjoy the noise, its kind of this huge Woooooooosh sound that vibrates through your whole body, and that starts the "adreleine (SP?) rush"! :)

The more you ride it, the more you want it!
exactly tohot2se, i enjoy the noise to. Gets you ready to ride. standing next to someone who has never been on it before, seeing the fear in there face ho, ho, ho, ho, ho (as tim allen would say)and i can go on. by the way are we ever going to see you tohot2se?

I really don't like the noise. Not that it is a bad sound, it's just too loud. Mantis is ok, as that ride is a little out of the way and the noise is not disturbing. But, I wish they would modify Raptor to make it run quieter. The roar of the trains is especially annoying at the Burger Patio, which used to be a nice, peaceful place to eat in the pre-Raptor days. Raptor and Mantis are GREAT rides though, don't get me wrong.
The whole roar of a rolle coaster it what draws some of the attenetion to it. W/ Raptor it adds an awesome sound to the whole front section of the park. No matter where you are when you can hear it you always have the sense of yeah its out there somewhere and guess what I have ridden it. It's a phycologicall(SP?) think I quess. mayeb it is just me. But i like it that way! :)
Yeah! It adds a great feeling to the front of the park. It is so cool when you are waling by and you look up and, Wooooooosh, the train goes down the hill. It really gets the Adreleine going in me. So I think they should keep it so it makes that noise.

I may sound weird but I like to watch and see all the different noises the ride makes. Especially at certain points like a loop or corkscrew.

Without the Raptor Roar the front of the park is just DEAD. :)

I like the roars and don't like the roars. Parts of Mantis' line come REALLY close to the tracks and the sound is really unbearable there. Raptor's doesn't seem to bother me much. probably because most of the circuit is away from the line. That roar does seem to make the ride interesting. Superman at SFMM has to be the loudest thing I even heard! It sounds like a jet!! Even though that was the stupidest ride ever, I couldn't help but look up every time a car shot up the incline. I hope MF makes that noise but I doubt it will for some technical reason that I have no idea of. :)
I think Mantis is the second loudest B&M I've heard. Medusa at SFGAd has it beat though. That train blasts by probably not 10 feet away from the queue line...

I personally love the roar of Mantis while standing in line. It is very loud, but it adds alot of adrenaline and excitement to the wait in line. I like it now, but it especially added to the ride the first time I rode it.
You bet it does..you have to stop talking when the it goes past..
