Thank you. I knew what it was, just couldn't get the word from my brain to my fingers.

From FAA Circular AC 70/7460 - Obstruction Marking and Lighting:

20. STRUCTURES TO BE MARKED AND LIGHTED
Any temporary or permanent structure, including all
appurtenances, that exceeds an overall height of 200
feet (61m) above ground level (AGL) or exceeds any
obstruction standard contained in 14 CFR part 77,
should normally be marked and/or lighted. However,
an FAA aeronautical study may reveal that the
absence of marking and/or lighting will not impair
aviation safety.

Sounds like there is a bit of ambiguity to it, and I'm guessing the fact that Magnum has chaser lights going the length of the lift satisfies this requirement. As for WT, probably the fact that the spikes are lit also satisfy this rule.

^Which is why the castles at both Magic Kingdoms are exactly 199 feet tall. Pretty creative, those Imagineers...

As far as lighting, I like the idea of some holiday theming. TTD can definitely be seen from miles away due to the flood lights. But MF is hard to see from large distances because the lights are pretty faint and the members that they are shining on are pretty small relative to the huge TTD supports.

But in Cincinnati, The Beach Waterpark always has a "Holiday in Lights" set-up where they decorate the whole waterpark with holiday lights and people can walk through enjoying the season. That would be really cool if CP decorated the park with a ton of lights and opened it up just for a big winter celebration. But it would also be a LOT colder.......... *** Edited 10/26/2007 2:11:49 AM UTC by Dvo***

I guess airplanes don't fly in the winter. I think it's pretty clear that CP's rule is 300 feet. Magnum and Wicked Twister do not have any lights.

Another hypothesis, Disney is too close to a major airport, so perhaps their "strobe ceiling" is lower at 200 ft, then Cedar Point's is (300 ft.)

Or maybe since CP has a lot of strobes around Magnum and WT, i.e. MF, PT, and TTD, they figure planes wouldn't dare come even close to that area.

^Still not making any sense. Back in 1989 Magnum was the only tall ride in the back of the park, guess what, no light. In the winter the park is completely dark minus a couple lights that shine on the midway and the blinking lights on TTD, MF, Power Tower, and Space Spiral.

It's more than likely what Touchdown said with how close you are to an airport. Unless a plane is landing, taking off, or crashing 200-300 feet is very low. Even when you take aerial shots of the park, maybe Walt could chime in, the planes are still much higher than TTD. *** Edited 10/26/2007 6:57:21 PM UTC by Gomez***
