Best CP Flat Rides?

2WheelTravlr's avatar

I'll be at CP for the first time in just over a week! I'm a planning geek so I already have a spreadsheet of coaster rankings and facts, but I've ignored CP's flat ride selection (other than Cedar Downs because I can't wait to ride it). So, I'm curious, what are your favorite flat rides at the park? Any that are "don't miss" and any that are something we can definitely skip?

TIA!

The train is pretty flat.

I am not sure exactly how they classify a ride as a flat ride, but I enjoy the following in this order:

SkyHawk, MaxAir, Cedar Downs, Witches Wheel, Wave Swinger, Lake Erie Eagles, Troika Troika Troika.

Ones to skip: Tiki Twirl, Matterhorn, Super Himalaya, Scrambler. All four are about the same, I guess they are okay when other rides are crowded. Monster takes too long to load & unload. Dodgem stinks since they changed cars a couple years ago.

I love Cedar Downs, the call of the Belmont is great. "War Emblem is toiling as they head for home......"

Best: SkyHawk

Most intense/stomach testing: MaxAir

Best classic: Witches Wheel

Best old school: Cedar Downs

Best views: WindSeeker (recommend both a blue sky day ride and night ride)

Worst: Dodgem. It's awful now. Don't even think about wasting your time.

IMO

CP Coaster Top 10: 1. Steel Vengeance (40 rides to date) 2. Top Thrill Dragster (191 launches to date, 4 rollbacks) 3. Magnum XL 200 4. Millennium Force 5. Maverick 6. Raptor 7. GateKeeper 8. Valravn 9. Rougarou 10. Gemini

A spread sheet?

Anyway, my advice, always, is ride all the rides. There’s something for everyone. CP is full of antiques, classics, and modern thrill rides.

Skyhawk, Cedar Downs, Witches Wheel, Max Air... I used to enjoy the bumper cars, but haven't ridden them since the change...

Does Sky Ride count??? Or the train??? Both are musts for me...

I know, the spread sheet is beyond pathetic!

You're right, with 3 days we should have enough time to ride them all, but I still like to categorize things so if the weather goes to heck I can still feel like we at least rode the best of the best. If the weather is good, we definitely plan to try and ride them all!

Two days with decent weather and you can easily ride every ride in the park, most more than once. Avoiding the longest queue times for the popular rides is the easiest to do this.

Late night, the last 2-3 hours before the park closes, you should have plenty of time to ride the big rides with little wait and may even get a re-ride or skip from unload to load platform. SV do it for early entry or the last ride of the night, the park keeps the queues open until 6 minutes after park closing and runs.

Unless its storming severely for days you won't have problem, after bad weather clears the park is usually pretty empty and you'll have the run of the place.

Keep in mind the place is huge, walking from ride A on one side to ride B on the other can be a 45 minute - 1 hour ordeal given crowds. Plan out a route on a map if you like. And forget the travel channel can-you-ride-in-so-many-hours challenges, they are ridiculous and take little time to plan around.

As much as I love Skyhawk, Snake river falls is a ride you should try. You have to get a locker first.

Steel Vengeance rides: 224

We'll be there next week mid-week and I've budgeted for 2 days worth of Fastlane+, so I'm thinking that will help a bunch with wait times.

This will probably be my only chance to visit Cedar Point so I really don't want to miss anything awesome. I think a route map will be a good idea - when I'm on Google Maps it looks like about a mile from one end of the park to the other, is this about right? If so, then size-wise is about the same as Epcot front-to-back or Six Flags Magic Mountain from X2 to Twisted Colossus. The major difference is humidity, I'm from the desert so when it's sticky out I sort of melt, and trying to weave through crowds makes it so much worse. At least there's not a hillclimb section like we have at Magic Mountain!

We won't be carrying anything that can't get wet and everything fits in zipper pockets so I think we'll be able to avoid the locker hassle, and yay for wet rides on hot days.

I think I'll map everything out and leave off Tiki Twirl, Matterhorn, Super Himalaya, Scrambler and the bumper cars - all of those I've ridden a bunch of times so they're skippable. If we get bored (haha!) we can ride those too, but I'm happy to leave them off if there's nothing special about them.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I am so excited about this trip!

I happen to be a fan of flats, whether they are large thrill rides or carnival variety. And flats tend to repeat from park to park all over the world and to me it’s intersting to compare them.
For instance, I just came from Busch Gardens. They have a Himalaya and a Tea Cup ride, both from Mack, in the Italy section. I was glad I chose to ride them, as they turned out to be fast with long cycles. Probably the best of those style of rides that I’ve come across in a while.
And maybe it’s just me. If you’re strictly a coaster fan, maybe missing a few flats won’t be crucial and lord knows you’ll find plenty to do at CP anyway. But if you like everything about the amusement park and enjoy all rides like I do, then by all means give everything a try. You’ll have the advantage of FL+ and you can use it on a lot of flats at the park, too. You’ll be surprised by how much you’ll get done over some days.

On your list of toss-offs, I’d at least put Tiki Twirl back in. It’s still pretty fast and it has moved around Cedar Point since 1970 so it’s pushing 50. Those old Calypsos are becoming rare, and I’m glad CP still has a good example. Watch the ride before you go- there’s a set of cars that spins slightly faster than the rest. I think it’s one of the green ones. I usually ask if I can please sit in one of those and I always enjoy that ride a lot. It’s dizzying fun.

I hope you have a great time on your trip. I love first-timers.

I'll add Tiki Twirl back on the list, I do love the oldies, and it's hard to find them in good working order with a nice cycle. It's funny, there's a goofy little indoor amusement area on the beach here in Oregon, they have an old tilt-a-whirl and I love that thing so much because they have nice long cycles and you can really lean into it and make it spin. It's great when you can actually have some control over the ride you get, same with flying skooters, simple and so fun.

There is a tilt-a-whirl located in camp snoopy. It's a must ride for me and am not embarrassed to ride it by myself.

I’ll join you any time. I like that Tilt. It’s no Turkey Whirl, but a good one regardless.

I, too, am not embarrassed to ride Tilt-A-Whirl by myself. I ride all of the flats on most of my visits (water rides excluded - I love them, just don't want to be water logged all day). While I love the thrill of MaxAir and Skyhawk, I just love the feel of Tiki Twirl, Scrambler, and Tilt-A-Whirl. (I will say though that if Camp Snoopy is chock full of little kids and the lines are rough, I will skip it so as not to have any kids miss out.)

I have said it before, Tilt-A-Whirl is so underrated. Sure, it doesn't compare to a huge record breaking coaster, but, it is such a classic, fun ride...and who can ride this and not get the giggles! :D

I love some of the old school flat rides like Tiki Twirl, Tilt-A-Whirl, Scrambler, Matterhorn, Troika and Ocean Motion. They provide a different thrill than the coasters and are a big part of the CP experience.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

Skyhawk is my favorite.

Tilt-a-whirl in Camp Snoopy is a greatest kids ride if you like to spin a lot.

Troika Troika Troika! Hopefully Cedar Point will give it the refurb and LED upgrade like Monster got and the other Troikas got at other CF parks.
