Banshee ---> Mantis/Steel Force

Can someone link a picture of their Banshee T-shirt/keychain/pin? I've been looking all over this site and have not been able to find a pic of it. Living in PA I frequent Dorney Park and just found out about the whole Banshee/Mantis/Steel Force thing.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!!

4 summers of employment in ride operations does stuff to you.

Thanx , I have never see this logo before, i heard about Mantis being called this but due to what a banshee is! CP did not want that affiliation with there park, but honestly they should call it that during hallowed weekends!!! but once again thanx!!!

Being a Ride Warrior is just not a job!
It's a way of life!!!
I have ridden the all the coasters at K.I. and C.P. that i have lost count!!!!! and it is not the amount of times i have ridden, it is just the joy of riding them for me!!!!

Many thanks. Much appreciated.

Banshee is a much better name, but I think it had something to do with PC reasons as to why they changed it. I think I remember reading something to that effect on here.

From RCDB:

Initially, Mantis was to be named "Banshee." In Irish folklore, a banshee was a female spirit whose wail was said to foretell a death in the family. After this definition was printed in a local newspaper, Cedar Point felt uncomfortable with it in its patrons' minds in association with the new coaster. For sensitivity reasons, the name was changed to Mantis, which was on a short list of names for the coaster.

From Wikipedia:

The original name for this ride was to be Banshee. The name was quickly changed when Cedar Point realized the full negative connotations of the word banshee and all 'Banshee' stickers, pins and other promotional materials that had been released were recalled.
...
Dorney Park adopted the Banshee logo for its hypercoaster Steel Force, which opened in 1997.

And yet Halloweekends...an event largely centered on death, seems to have offended no one.

I'd bet that the Banshee name would go over much better today than it did in 1996. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the instant, non-localized feedback provided by the internet, had it existed then as it does now, would have given CP a better barometer for how inoffensive the Banshee name was to the public at large.

What's kind of interesting is that they chose the banshee name (and had a logo that looked pretty much like you would expect) but seemed to have never come across the definition of what a banshee is.

I mean, how do you do that much research into a name without coming across at least the definition of what a banshee is?

After 14 years, it's really weird to consider what that coaster would look like if it was named Banshee and painted a different color scheme. I assume it would have been black and purple or something?

I was under the impression that the Banshee colors are the same as Mantis', given that the Banshee logo that CH linked to matches Mantis' colors.

Which would make sense, given that I've yet to see a purple mantis in the wild. ;)

Maybe they are elusive, much like the green raptor :)

DJ - you mean like this one?

And you're right about the colors being the same. Most of them would have been delivered by the time the name change was made, and would have been painted at the factory with whatever colors CP had chosen for Banshee. Regardless of name, the ride was going to be purple and yellow.

And yet no one had a problem with Demon Drop.

Perhaps faux religious outrage wasn't in fashion until the 90's.

I really like the name banshee better.....than mantis

Mantis' are green right? They should have painted mantis green like raptor, and Raptor another color, just not yellow. Please CP, no more yellow, orange, or red for the park.

But you know they will paint windseeker those colors, because i just jinxed it......:)

Purple and black would have looked sweet. It would make the ride look mysterious and looming....

What's funny is there didn't seem to be any outrage over Banshee.

Just that someone finally read the definition of Banshee to Dick once it was printed in a newspaper and he decided that he didn't like it.

Ah, I see. I thought there was some sort of public outcry.
