I was just curious as to what the average age is for employees there. I understand that the majority of the people there are college kids, but I'm wondering what the general age "breakdown" is.

Well, you have to be 18 (or a high school grad) to live in housing. There are younger kids who are locals and even some 14-15 year olds in some select jobs (like catering).
Older college kids (upperclassmen) tend to have to go off and do internships in their last year or two so I think that limits the number of 21-25 year olds.
I never worked up exact numbers but I'd say 18 is the average.

The average age (at least this summer) was definatey 20. It seems that pretty much everyone I worked with was at that age. When I told people that I'm 18 they would all say, "What? I thought you were 20!"

2005/2006: Cedar Point - Millennium Force
2007/2008/2009: Walt Disney World - Magic Kingdom - Tomorrowland Speedway
2008: Hard Rock Park - Maximum RPM! Opening Supervisor
2008/2009: Universal Orlando - Men in Black: Alien Attack Team Leader, Guest Services Coordinator
You do have to look at all departments though and a lot of younger kids work in foods, housekeeping and so forth.
Maybe it is 19 or 20. If you go to Louie's you will find that everyone is over 21.......not.

I would say that the majority of the people in rides seemed to be around my age, which would be inbetween freshman and sophomore year of college. After that the range generally went all the way up to guys who had just graduated, but then it really drops off.

My curiosity is based largely in fantasy. I'm 26, and since the job market can be crappy (at best) where I live, I've been tossing around the idea of spending a summer working there. But, I don't want to (no offense intended here) be the oldest guy by a long-shot, and end up feeling out of place based on that. Additionally, I might find it tough to take orders from a 20-year old! ;)

Think of it this way, you'll be able to make plenty of cash on the side as "The Beer Man".

You're definately right about that
lol
Very good point :)
A case of beer? Sure - that will be $78.95 plus deposit.

hey DJ....There are older people out there. I have friends there that are 25 26 30..I myself am 42 I have worked there a total of 4 seasons. I also did it because I always thought it would be fun then I got hooked. But also I am a local so I really don't deal with housing and stuff like that. It's not bad taking directions from younger people. You just have to have an open mind.

Yeah, I really don't have a problem with taking orders from younglings (notice the "wink" above).
Its good to know that there are other "big kids" who wanna work there. Right now, I'm working as a contractor (which doesn't exactly have job security - especially in MI), so I might be applying to work there next year. Although, I really don't wanna shave my goatee... :(

If you average everyone out, it probably ends up around 23-27 during the summer and somewhere in the 40's during the Winter. Most of the employees are between 18 and 23. There are enough older folks in management to skew the number up. There are also a number of older seasonals working at the park.
I worked there when I was 18 & 19, then went back working weekends at the age of 28. I had just as good of a time when I was 28 as I did when I was 18. The younger crowd didn't even know I was 28, they thought I was just out of college. Try it out by doing weekends, and if you don't like it, you can always leave.

As your sig. points out, you were a sweep in '03. Was that by choice?
I'm just curious, since I'm fairly sure I'd only want to work on a ride...

dj......You can work just weekends in rides. My husband and I both did it in 2000. He on Blue Streak. Me on Mantis. We worked just weekends in May and 1 weekend in June then left and came back Sept and Oct. We also kept our Employee Id's for the whole summer. But I also worked there 2 years before that.

When I went back to work weekends in 2003, it was actually with the help of a friend that I had the pleasure of working with back in 92-93. She eventually became the manager of Environmental Services. Another girl from 92 thought it would be interesting to go back for a weekend or two. I ended up staying and worked every other weekend until the very last day of the season. I also ended up working opening weekend of 2004.
Back when I was first worked in rides, I had the oppotunity to work as a sweep from time to time and loved it. So having the chance to work in both areas, I felt that sweeping was more for me when I went back. I honestly didn't think it would last as long as it did. But, I got a great tan, free entry to the park on my weekends off, and met alot of great people, including those who worked on rides.
