Are CP's prices as bad compared to other places?

At the movies the other night I got a medium pop and Sweedish Fish for 9 fricken dollars. I thought that was the biggest rip off of my life. I thought to myself, I will never complain about CP food prices ever again. Now, do you guys think CP's prices are near as bad as sport game food and movie theater food? Or even SF?

There all bad.

Yes. All entertainment food prices are bad, but it's a matter of quality vs. price, not just the dollar amount.

Then why did you buy it?

^Good call. To answer the question, though, I think that any large public venue (amusement parks, concerts, sports events, etc.) will have awful prices. But I live in Chicagoland, and the prices at SFGAm are much worse than CP. Parking at SFGAm is $15 per car. Not to mention 2 of the haunts during Fright Fest are an additional fee unless you have a season pass.... brutal.

It comes down to choice. Everyone has a choice as to how they spend their money when it comes to retail, movies, and amusement parks. Does it mean that prices aren't bad? No, but since we can't change those prices, we can choose not to pay them, and seek out alternative options.

from the business aspect, every company wants to make as much money as they can from what they sell. This is just a given, so as long as there still selling theyll try to make as much profit as possible. Just think about it all the pop machines in lines at cedar point. When I was a guest back in 07 I saw all of milleniums force machines get restocked twice in a day. At $3 a pop thats a good amount of money.

As far as being bad, its hard to judge that because if your comparing it to say a concert or the movies then no, just because the large variety. If compared to everyday eating out in your local town then yes its bad compared to there.

True, but everything in Chicagoland costs more. Just to drive across the city costs more than $12. Granted, all SF parks have $15-$25 parking this year, but that's because it's run by a sports team owner, so it's run like a football game. (not that I think that's the right move, because sports games are 'spensive)

I'd have to say that prices have to be higher at CP than at a movie theater. They are only open 4-5 good months out of the year and spend a whole lot more cash making improvements than movie theaters do or even sporting venues. CP has spent $85,000,000 in the last 8 years on 4 rides. Which of the other venues mentioned above has made that kind of investment?

As far as quality of food and service, having run a fast food restaurant, I can tell you it takes months to train people to be really good at that type of work. And how many of the employees that they have to hire to work there are not even from America?

I seriously have gone down to about 1 movie in the theaters a year...(family of four). Instead we rent movies at Family Video in the "nearly new" section for $1 each and sometime's rent from the 2 for $1 section.

$9 for what you got is an extreme rip off.

With how fast movies come to DVD these days, my giant TV, and 1080P DVD player, the theater is almost pointless. I say almost, because I saw Dark Knight twice, and plan on going again if it is re-released in January - but, there's only a select few movies worth seeing like that.

In some ways CP can be high on prices like food and drinks, but I know that the season pass is worth the money to my family! We are already saving our money for next year!

^^ - I've seen it twice and was going to go again, but never had a chance.

I agree though on the TV DVD player. Heck, I don't even have an upconvert player (yet, Blu-ray is in the plans) and the picture already looks a million times better than what I was watching before. Most movies I do wait until they come to DVD, but there are some I just won't miss in Theaters.

Next 2 on the list are Quantum of Solace and Watchmen.

Forget Blu-ray. The future isn't on a disc, its in the tubes. :)

There's no such thing as a price that's "too high" in a definitive sense. Just don't pay it if it's "too high". But yeah, they are high prices, but I tend to pack beef jerky in my car and just eat that.

Cedar Point - America's Roller Coast!
Ron Paul 2008/2012!

CP's prices are not too bad. The cost of a season pass or a one-day ticket is cheaper than similar product at most Six Flags park (especially for families). The parking is only 10$, cheaper than Six Flags once again. At Six Flags Great Adventure last month, I purchased a meal at Panda Express for about the same price that at Cedar Point. However, I plate of pasta + coke cost me 16$...

Drink and junk food (fries, burgers) are expensive at CP. However, there's other venues which provide better bargains (i.e.: Midway Market, Famous Daves, etc.).

I also appreciate that all customers (but the VIP, but they are rare) are equal at Cedar Point. There's no VIP parking, no FlashPass system...

The Cleveland Indians charge $4 for the same size Pepsi and water bottles that CP sells. Both places charge too much. In general the Indians Prices are somewhat higher than Cedar Point. That's why we usually eat elsewhere before going to the game.

As for the movies, recently we bought a family pack or whatever it was called. It was a giant popcorn and two drinks it cost $20.50. I never saw a price listed before I ordered it otherwise I'd have never bought it. Now I know why they never posted the price. I'll never do that again. Also, the popcorn was dry and was supposed to have butter, but you sure could have fooled me. Oh, they aready did. Cha-ching!!

The difference between movie theaters and cedar point? Refills. Movie theaters almost always offer free or very cheap refills on pop and popcorn, while cedar point doesnt.

djDaemon's avatar

Ah, but the refills on souvenir cups are cheap at CP... as compared to the price of the cup, anyway. ;)

I think the consensus of many people on this site is that it is not necessarily the price that is outlandish at Cedar Point, but rather the quality (and consistency thereof).

With years of experience, I know, from my perspective, what is good and what is not, but as a general rule we eat as little as possible when actually at Cedar Point, and absolutely never a meal (gourmet pretzels, forzen custard to name a couple). My high school cafeteria served better food than most options at CP.
