Advice on directions?

Hi all -

I'll be making my first visit to CP Oct. 21 and am trying to find the best way to get there from Harrisburg, Pa. I'll be jumping on the Pa turnpike. I've noticed two different ways to get to CP: cut diagonally northwest from Pittsburgh, or take the PA turnpike to Ohio turnpike and go north.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to which is the easier (and shorter) route?

Your best bet is to take the Pennsylvania Turnpike to the Ohio Turnpike, then follow the Ohio Turnpike directions here.

I would use Mapquest. Type in the address. Then press the quickest way.

I wouldn't... If Mapquest hasn't given you the wrong directions atleast once, you haven't used it enough.

DBCP... that is very true.
I have had wrong directions more than a few times from Mapquest. The worst being the most round-a-bout, ridiculous way to Knoebels... what a disaster!

JPiccolo... get yourself an Atlas. They work wonders!

All I can say is dont take the exit to route 250 you will be sorry. Take the exit before 250 which is Rye Beach Road.

Maybe I don't know my US geography as well as I should, but I believe route 250 wouldn't be his only problem, he would have passed CP. Plus, the 250 exit will take you on a very straightforward detour when coming from Michigan.

Easiest way from there is PA turnpike West to the OH turnpike. OH turnpike West to State Route 57N (Lorain, Oh exit) When you get off at State Rt. 57 N you want to get into the left lane heading northbound the exit for I-90\SR2 West is about 3/4 if a mile north from here (It also happens to be the closest point that SR 2 and the Oh turnpike come together). Turn left onto I-90/State Route 2 heading West. About 2miles after getting on the highway the road will split. STAY IN THE RIGHT TWO LANES MARKED STATE ROUTE 2. Follow SR 2 West for about 40 min. (approx.) till you get to Rye Beach Rd. exit. Get off at this exit and turn Right. At the first light (Shell gas station on the corner) turn left and follow the signs to CP. I drive a truck up and down this area everyday for a living and live right off of the SR 57 exit. I know this area very well and this is the fastest, most direct route to the park for you to follow. Hope it helps you out.

Vince, if you're coming from the East, you'll hit Rye Beach Road before hitting the busy 250 exit.

I've never had any problems with 250 - I take it every time and it's pretty smooth. Although. I'm usually headed in 10-30 minutes before the park opens and on lighter days (May, Sept).

I always take 4. No reason other than its the first CP exit. And its a nice semi-scenic run through downtown Sandusky.

^^^I see, thanks Doug.

As for taking 4, last time I did that I somehow got lost in Sandusky and was down at the water and CP was not in sight. The time before that I took 4 as well and got there no problem. When I go at the end of the month I think I'm going to take the next exit and get off at 250 and that will take me right into town. My hotel is on 250 so I think it will be easier.

I don't stay anywhere but on Point. I can see if your hotel is on 250, it being easier.

Listen to clone 12...whatever. He's right on the money, except that I would turn right off of Rye Beach Road onto the Chaussee, long before you get to the Causeway. Just that little short-cut saves a good ten minutes right there. Mr. Inkspot, this route cuts 25 minutes off of travel time from points east. (pun intended.)

Isn't that what I said in the second post? :)

I've actually timed the difference between taking the Chaussee versus the Causeway from the East, and my unscientific results show them to be about the same. Of course, during the morning rush, the Chaussee is much faster.

Believe me John, if I were of age I would be staying onPoint.

onPoint = Cedar Point's official Blog ;)

I know it's not about what the original poster asked, but coming from Michigan, Route 4 is a hidden gem. Fastest way to get to the Causeway, and it is, as Jugga said, a scenic drive through the town of Sandusky, even passing the Sandusky High School, home of the Blue Streaks :).

Hail to the Victors

When I went (from near Philly) we took the PA turnpike from the OH turnpike. I agree that mapquest usually blows, but in the case of CP it gave us good directions once were were into OH.

It's always time for a Cedar Point road trip!
