I can generally rank my top couple [1. Shivering Timbers 2. Magnum/MF 4. Raptor 5. Batman@SFGAM]
Beyond that, it's tricky. I tend to rank based on a wow factor. If I come back to the station either laughing with a goofy grin, w/ a vacant stare, or just twitching mildly, its gonna get a good rating. If I'm half asleep, it'll appear somewhere near the bottom. =) I rank Magnum so high because it's the last ride I was afraid of.

Magnum has been #1 on my list for close to 3 years. IMO, I think no coaster comes close to it (haven't rode MF yet, will in 25 days)I must say Apollo's Chariot was very, very good, but I think Magnum is one notch higher: Excellent. AC has that B&M style where everything is controlled. Don't get me wrong, AC has good airtime, but Magnum seems more "out of control" because its rougher.
Regarding my Top 5 I see this:
1. Magnum
2. Thunderbolt at KW
3. Raptor
4. Apolo's Chariot at BGW
5. Steel Phantom at KW

Well, it's getting harder and harder for me to "rank" coasters as I ride more of them.
For instance, until this year I had a CLEAR-CUT #1 woodie in the Coney Island Cyclone, but this year I've ridden Villain at SFO, ROAR at SFA (not an airtime machine, but very very fun), and I've gained more appreciation for Thunderbolt at Kennywood. And I haven't even hit Knoebles', Lake Compounce, or Hershey yet this year, all of which I plan on getting to and have apparently-great woodies.
For steel, it's just as tough if not even "worse". Magnum used to be far and away my #1 steel ride (with Medusa at SFGAdv coming in #2, and nothing else coming close), but this year introduced me to Superman:Ride of Steel (SFA, hopefully DL and NE), MF, S:UE, Batman Knight Flight... And next year's "Mystery Coaster" at Kennywood will likely muddy the waters even more.
I'm an "airtime whore" as Jeff puts it, but ANY coaster that doesn't hurt me (and even some that do ;) ) is Ok in my book...

Hey...new poster here, well..."poster" being the key word. I've actually been observing since last fall. In general, I think people are sometimes too specific on the characteristics of coasters and their attributes. One word that can summarize it all is "Excitement". Whether you get off dizzy, whether you're ready for another ride...getting off and being excited about what you just rode is what really counts.
I see people posting how Magnum has better airtime, how Magnum has better views, how Magnum has better elements, ect. This is where the term "Excitement" comes into great significance.
After riding Millennium Force 5 times (twice at night, front seat once) I can attribute the "Excitement" value at VERY high. Magnum also being number 1 in my book, I took a spin on the classic ride once after riding The Force. Keeping my mind free of biased opinion and gloomy emotions towards the baby I've ridden for over 10 years, I got on...and judged the ride. The "Excitement factor", to say the least...was mediocre compared to Millennium Force. I would go over a hill, "hey...nice airtime." I would look at the views, "hey...nice views." But after going down the hill, airtime or not...the "Excitement" wasn't as high. No matter how hard I tried to lean towards the Magnum in honest, humble opinion...The Force always took the occasion in my book.
This brings into mind how we judge coasters. Sometimes I think we, as enthusiast, judge them too loosely based on "elements" rather than "experience". Like Thunderbolt for example...making the number 1 spot on Nap's top ten list last year. Do you think the coaster made it in proposition of "excitement" or "elements"? My point exactly....I'll get off and name 1 million "elements" that mean the world....but nothing compares to that one word that summarizes it all..."Excitment".
Think of it in a general persons p.o.v...visiting Cedar Point. They have one ride left...Millennium Force or Magnum. Honestly...by the reactions of crowds, and the lines that occompany...Millennium Force would be top dawg...for "Excitement". You've never riden Millennim Force or Magnum before, you ride them both. I don't see a lot of people getting off Magnum and being as excited about what they just rode in comparison to Millennium Force.
BTW- In front seat, on the first and second hills...I received airtime the whole pull over. Bunny hop included. 2. Airtime
3. G-force
The higher those three things are, the more I like the coaster. Right now my number one is still Magnum because I've only ridden MF once and haven't experienced the ride to its fullest yet. I'm not one of these people who will ride a coaster once and say it's my new number one. (It usually takes two rides:))

One thing is for certain, if CP didn't have Magnum, than Millennium Force would have had more airtime and would have been more like Superman in at SFNE.
BUT, becuase CP already had Magnum, they wanted something different. I commend CP for making that decision because now CP has the best of both worlds...airtime @ speed.
(of course, so does SFNE, it's just found on one ride.)

i only ask one question of myself when the term "favorite coaster" comes up..does it have "scads of replay value" (like a good Plat Station game)..if the answer is yes, then it's on my list, like MF, Maggy, Viper at SFGAm (AWESOME airtime there) or even Gemini or Blue Streak...i love them all for different reasons, as they are like dogs:all one species, different breeds. each has qualities that sets it apart from the others. some dogs herd, some hunt. some coasters are pure speed, some are all air. just enjoy and appreciate them for what they are...FUN!!!

Really for me I go to a few new parks a year, and its so hard to rank new coasters compared to the traditional favorites. Going to other parks makes you appreciate what you have at your home park and at the same time opens you to new experiences that you would otherwise miss out on at your home park.
I got on the Lightning Racer at Hershey and that ride made me realize two things. 1. We MUST have these flyer trains on mean streak. 2. If I got to chose the next coaster(s) at CP it would be a GCI dueleing racing thing like LR at Hershey. BTW I count it as two coasters so that would help the count too.

as some previous people have mentioned, it really is impossible for there to be a true "best coaster" because for the mostpart people are biased based on the fact that they ride some coasters (those at their home park) more than they do at parks they visit once in a while. Also sometimes special circumstances have to be put into accout (ie at night, front/back seat etc) For instance, the Beast at Kings Island is an incredible ride IMO at night, while in the day it's very average. Riding in the front of raptor creates a mutch better experience. SO if u're going to make a ranking for coasters u should probably make it general, as in best rides day or nite and in any seat. Based on that criteria, here it goes......1. Magnum/MF (i still can't decide) 3. Viper at SFGAm 4. Legend at Holiday World 5. Thunderbolt or Raven I can't decide

i wil not touch Shockwave with a 10-foot pole and i have actually warned first-time SFGAm visitors away from it. that thing should be sold for scrap...NOW!! SFGAm has a hit on their hands with Raging Bull and Viper..Viper has the best airtime and ultimate head-choppers of any woodie i've ever ridden(going to get on Shivering Timbers later this year, so that could change)..but MF is the ride i have dreams about and am hurting to ride again. i would rather drive 5 hours east on 80 than 2 hours north on 294 any day...

I have just returned from my first ever CP trip and I must say that Magnum asoulutely blew me away! Millennium Force rocks the house down as well, but I was expecting that. I figured Magnum would be like Desperado outside Vegas, (both first generation arrow hypers) I was wrong! I actually found myself grasping my lapbar twice because of the intensity of the drops and ejector airtime. MF seems to have floater air in comparison, and has the flat out breakneck speed throughout. They sure make for an incredible 1-2 punch for huge steel coasters.
