A quick question about Ohio Route 2

FTR: I've driven both Rt 2 and 80/90 from 280. Others can, but I can't tell the difference between the two routes time-wise. Rt 2 is a bit shorter distance, a bit more scenic, and toll-free, but requires country-road passing skills.

I find the turnpike less stressful because there is more room to avoid the occasional careless driver, so that's the route I prefer. I think that means I'm old at heart.

From the turnpike, Rt 4 is a win over US 250, even without considering traffic. From Rt 2, you come in on US-6, so it isn't an issue.

coasterluver, Do you ever get delayed by a train on that route?

I'm going tomorrow and I'm gonna take those exact directions, Shadow. There is an exit on OH-2 for Route 6, right? And then you take Route 6 all the way until you make the left onto the causeway? Sounds like a pretty good plan. 2 1/2 hours...wow...that's much quicker than the turnpike.

Shadow, how much of a delay did you encounter on I-280? Was it bad at all?

------------------
Yes there is an exit on ohio route 2 to get to route 6, I was at first going to take route 4 in, but route 6 comes up first and if i remember correctly has a sign to cedar point to go that way. Regardless, once you get off on route 6, signs point you right to cedar point..i'd say about 5-10 minutes off that exit. I didn't run into much delay at all on I-280, but to say the least they are tearing the sh*t outta that expressway you'll be amazed when you see it! I'm not too sure what the hell they are doing? Anyways, you're not on I-280 for any longer than maybe 10-15 minutes I believe before your exit to route 2 comes up. Just make sure you turn the right direction off of the exit and that the signs say 2 EAST not west! I believe you make a right off the exit but I can't remember 100% just be sure to check before you go too far on 2! Have fun!

Route 2 is basically abandoned at all times, besides, I figure if you are coming from Flint you will be getting on I-80 from around the I-75 expressway, and there is about 11 mile one lane traffic due to construction and it is sometimes dead stop but it is always busy. Route 2 does seem faster though. Check mapquest, they tell you all that crap.

Life has it's ups and downs, might as well make it on a coaster!

Shadow, when exiting from I-280 to Route 2 you need to turn left to be heading east. FYI, they are building a new bridge over the river that will not have to be raised when the large ships pass through. I-280 will become much more reliable in 2- 3 years when it is completed. In the past you had a chance of a half hour delay while you waited for the drawbridge to go back down.

With all these different routes being discussed, I may have to try some new ways to the Point. I may even try Rt. 2 again. Like I said before, I tried it a few times and it took forever because I got caught behind a line of slow moving traffic. My 83 Chevy Capriece isn't great at gunning it to pass semis.

Also, I believe the one lane construction on the Turnpike is progressing East. End of April and most of May it was between the Maumee(475/23) exit and the 75 exit. Now it's between 75 and 280, and they are almost done on that strech. Hopefully it won't progress any farther east.

I just got back after taking Route 2 and I have to say I like it much better. It took me about 3 hours with some significant traffic backups in Ann Arbor. Don't expect to have delays in that area, it was just because of the "idiotness" of some drivers. Without the traffic backups, it bet it would have taken about 2 1/2 hours.

I think I-280 is just fine when the drawbridge is down. We were only traveling on it for about 10 minutes. It is true that they are tearing that thing all to hell. It is quite neat to see all the new stuff that they've put up.

I prefer that route, pagoona, and have been taking it for 33 years. Once they finish the new bridge on 280, there will never be drawbridge backups again...although in 33 years, I've only been caught in that 3 or 4 times.

Ralph, I got caught behind a semi coming back from CP on Friday, one of the few times I've been in that situation. The truck was traveling at 60 mph, 5 mph OVER the speed limit. I suspect the people who hate getting stuck behind semis are those who like to drive well over the speed limit, which is something I do not do in Ohio, not with troopers who just LOVE to hand out very expensive tickets to people with Michigan license plates.

My personal best from Ft.Wayne to CP was 1 hr 47 min the summer of '80. On sunday we made it in 2hrs 20min, with 1 stop. Although I hate using 24-2-6, its the fastest way to go from the fort.

No trains on that route maverick!

I know there are other ways to get to the CP, but I always take the turnpike. Anyway, I want to avoid the bridgework on 280, the plan is to take 75 south to the turnpike. I have never got on the turnpike that way, so I was wondering how well it is marked? Meaning is there signs telling you where to go? Also, which way is better Route 4 north, or US 250 north?

Thanks for any help.

It's marked fairly well, I doubt you'll miss it. The on ramp is in Perrysburg. If you avoid the 280 bridge work by going this way, just be warned that you will merge into single lane traffic on the turnpike, and say in one lane traffic for at least 7 or 8 miles until you get to 280's turnpike entrance. The roads in Toledo are a mess right now.

Almost forgot: definately take Rt. 4. Stay away from 250 at all costs.

Thank you very much Ralph. The roads around me here in MI are pretty much a mess too.
The road work on 280 isnt that bad guys. Your making it sound like its the plague or something. and why avoid 250? i take it all the time, i get off from route 2 there. Theres always no traffic and we stop at the McDonalds there for Breakfast.

I agree totally.. 280 isn't bad at all.. You're on it for a total of like 5-10 minutes.. and if its closed down, there are other ways to get to 2.
280 is completely shut down now - or at least it was Saturday and Sunday this weekend (6/21-6/22). You'll have to take 75 to 80/90 and go that way, or you can get off of 75 at the Oregon exit, which will take you to Route 2. There's horrible construction on the West bound 80/90, but you can still get off at 280 and follow the detour through Perrysburg.

Check the Construction pages before you go - 280 is usually closed on the weekends. Its open during the week though.

I drive from Detroit and usually we go 280 to the turnpike. I've gone 2 and its about the same as far as time. My parents usually tell me to go the turnpike because interstates are GENERALLY safer than highways. I'm not too sure now though. The construction near the drawwbridge is quite possibly the scariest bit of driving you'll ever do. Seems like every year I go to Cedar Point there is a portion of the drive where the walls are inches from your car while traveling at 50+.

If you're doing 50+, you're speeding. The speedlimit is 45 and 35 through most of the construction. Its not so bad when you do the speedlimit.
Not to mention Ohio cops can be real pricks to Michigan driver's who don't obey the speed limit signs, ESPECIALLY through construction areas.

the one good thing is in two years, there will be no more drawbridge.
