A few questions...

I've tried searching the 130+ pages in this forum for a couple of things... But it seems as if in the Employee Lounge, things get off topic very quickly and questions are left unanswered. So, if I may, here are a few questions.

1.) Scheduling. How far in advance do you receive your schedule?

2.) Age. I will be 17 when I first begin at the point (if hired). I am applying to Ride Photos. How likely is it that once I turn 18, will I be trained on the/a ride? I don't care very much, I am just interested to see if I tell them I'm willing to work a ride once I become of age, if they will train me on one.

3.) Water. I read somewhere that water bottles must be out of the public view. Is this true? And if so, why? When I was at the point in 2008 I don't recall seeing an employee without his friendly H2O bottle.

4.) Time availiable. I will be going to Ohio State (Insert pro OSU statement here) and do not start school until September 23rd. Is this seen as a plus by hiring managers? As we are able to stay over a month longer than most other college fellows.

Thank you so much!

Jeff

1. Not to sure about other departments but in Park Operations you should receive your schedule about 3 to 4 days before the start of it.

2. Highly doubtful. Once you are in Merch, they probably wont let you go. You could pick up extra hours but that is only if they are available. Not sure if its still like this but you use to be able to work on the train at 17 until you turned 18.

If you want to work in Park Operations you could work in Services or be a Lifeguard until you turn 18. You stand a better chance of switching to Rides from somewhere within Operations then you do from another department like Merchandise.

3. While I have never seen this rule wrote down anywhere, I never cared if water bottles were left in sight. They of course could not have labels on them. I was even told by my Vice President once that he wanted the water coolers out of guest view but did not care about water bottles because he knows everyone needs to stay hydrated.

4. Yes its a plus. I know my department would try to hire as many OSU students as he could. That should help you.

1. Plan for it to change, however. At least 2-3 times a week.

Just to clarify, you can work as a Ride Host on the CP&LE RR at 17 but you can not work on the Locomotive (or Engine House as we called) untill the age of 18. So if you want to get into rides at 17 I suggest you shoot for Ride host on the train and then put in for a transfer to the ride of or choice when you turn 18.

So they do still do it.Ok Jeff, your questions were answered. You can apply for rides even though you are 17.

Thank you everyone!

I'm really glad I am graduating with a high GPA... To get into OSU and all.

Another question.. is there such a thing as overtime at Cedar Point? If so, how much is it?

Edit: Oh! And by the way... The Cedar Point web page now says to check back after January 12th instead of late December.

No overtime. You will often be working over 40 hours per week but you won't get anything for it.

High GPA for OSU? We have a comedian here...

Excuse me... I am graduating with a 4.221. That's the highest GPA my high school has seen in quite a long time. Please, even if you aren't a fan of the school. This really is not the website for OSU bashing. Or bashing the people who go to the school.

Jeff

how is it that cedarpoint wont pay overtime

O-H! N-O!

coughcoughGoGatorscoughcough.

And yes, the overtime thing really sucks, and they claim that the bonus is supposed to be what makes up for it. If my $250-ish check this November was supposed to compensate me for working 60 hours a week all summer, then that's the funniest thing I've heard in a long time.

There is some sort of an exemption (at least in Ohio) so that employers are not required pay overtime for seasonal jobs. Then I believe there is an 80 hour max on the work week.

And yeah, the bonus is kind of a joke, but encourages a few folks to stay around.

I was just making a joke about Ohio State's low academic standards, it wasn't a personal attack on you. This is a site for Cedar Point and most of the people that visit are from Michigan or Ohio. Its inevitable that some jokes are gonna be made. I'm sure you can handle it.

80 hours is where Cedar Point tries to cap you for sanity reasons, but that is not the absolute cap. My personal best was 83.5 hours after breaks were taken out, but I know some people that closed in on 100. Managers aren't supposed to schedule you over 80 hours though, it is usually just a case where you are busy and work past your scheduled off time, you dont take your breaks, or you pick up an extra shift.
