A Day at Old Cedar Point

Ralph Wiggum's avatar

I'm glad I saw your post, I didn't know we needed reservations. I just called and they said they were almost filled up and they only had a few spots left. I'm excited to get the chance to finally meet some of you. I'll be the 17 year old kid wearing a homemade WT t-shirt sitting next to a gothic-looking kid. I just hope the weather doesn't get too nasty for my drive from Toledo.

I had to make a reservation and I made my reservation back on Tuesday...

It should be noted that the presentation will be at 2 p.m. not 1 p.m. like it said at the beginning of the thread.

I didn't really know anyone from GTTP in person, becasue I never met anyone before, but for those of you who went today, I was the guy with the girl in the Purple Ashland U jacket and She is Biochic here on GTTP.

I thought that was who you were! Loved the shirt!!!! I am just hoping the group in the center of the room will help put names with faces.
I was the person in a yellow jacket, sat in the middle of the room on the left(in front of John Hildebrandt and behind the guy who painted signs for the park back in the 50s). I had a white, Experience The Point, polo shirt on.

The presentation was wonderful. I never realized how George A. Bockeling was such a character and loved partys . The presentation was about 45 minutes long, and took us through a day of Cedar Point(with a bunch of side facts). Its great to hear that the Francis' might put out a updated edition of the book. I had a chance to chat with the Francis', and they are some of the nicest people. Overall, it was worth the drive 3 hour drive through bad snow storms to get there.

I never realized how many people were hardcore Cedar Point history freaks. After talking to some people(who spent $$$$ on CP stuff), they said Cedar Point history stuff is perhaps the most popular amusement park stuff to collect. And I never realized how much old Cedar Point stuff is in and around Sandusky.

And to round out the day, I stopped and had some Cedar Point french fries. I also stopped at Battery Park(where I saw Chris and his friend), Wicked Twister looks pretty darn big.

I should expand on my post. Yeah the drive was something else, battling wind and snow, but it was fun. I liked the presentation. I've got quite a few collectables from CP. I have a lot of Souvenir maps, and some other items from CP's past.

Thanks Andrew, my next question was going to be, who was the John guy Dave kept refering too. Now I know. I must've missed John Hildebrandt.

At the end of my trip I went and stopped by Shorline Park and took a peek at WT. That sucker is massive. It also fits in with the skyline more than I thought it would. :)

I was sitting in the middle of the room in the same row as Andrew. I wore my homemade Wicked Twister shirt. I was sitting next to my friend, Mike, whom you probably noticed was wearing shorts. I was across the aisle from Flisk and Biochic. The presentation was very good.

Afterwards I went to Battery Park and saw Andrew and his dad there. WT looks great on the skyline and is bigger than I expected. The horizontal track is a lot longer than I expected it to be. Before the presentation I went to CP via Cedar Point Rd. I was able to drive across the road in the back of the parking lot and head out on the causeway. WT is really beautiful up close. After seeing it, I am even more anxious to ride it in 62 more days!

Actually I sat in the very back of the room. :) That's ok though. I liked your WT shirt.

The lecture was quite interesting. Especially since we sat behind a cluster of older ladies who were there to "remember the good old days"- they were so cute. Flisk got his copy of the book signed, I spent some of his money on cute horse stuff in the gift shop and then we went to shoreline park (our favorite place to relax during the season when the hustle and bustle of commons gets a little too crazy). The profile of CP is gorgeous- even through the snow. Although, as maybe Jeff knows, the drive to and from Ashland in the snow I could have done with out. :) lol It was great to see a few fellow GTTPers there!

Hey Fellas, I was in the leather jacket behind Ralph, and next to Mr. Hildebrandt. Overall, Id say the presentation was good. I wish he would have presented some of the more interesting antedoctes though :-) Peace out.

Sorry about the mix-up Flisk. There was a guy across from me wearing either a blue or purple shirt. (I'm color blind and can't tell the difference) He had a girl with him so I assumed it was you and Biochic. Now that I think about it, I do remember seeing you in the back of the room. I would have liked to stay longer afterwards and meet some more people, but my friend had to be at work by six so we had to hurry home.

Just a sidenote... The Merry-Go-Round Museum said they would have more amusement park hisotry lectures in the future.

I was at the presentation also, had the pleasure of seeing Tyler, CPParrotthead, and Gemini. It was a great, interesting presentation, more than worth making the trek to Sandusky. Never knew that Boekling was such a partier and womanizer. Cedar Point's rich history is one of the great charms of the park. Seeing the wide age range of the crowd, from teenagers to very senior citizens, speaks volumes of how Cedar Point has a place in people's hearts, spanning many generations.

Yeah I saw you there Pete. You were the only person I recognized right away. Refering back to the "forum lurkers thread" I think I did recognized you because of the crazy drunk picturein your profile.:)

Wow, I didn't realize that so many of the people there were on GTTP, hey everybody...I think I had a red shirt on and brown coat, with a lovely lady in a purple coat, sitting behind Pete.

Anyway, I was very glad I made the trip, even though I was there an hour early. I think the best part was seeing Paul! You know...the woodcarver on Frontier Trail, well evidently he also does work in the off-season at the museum. I also got to say hi to Pete and Mr. Hildebrandt, and chatted with another full-timer at the mall.

I really enojoyed the presentation, Mr. Francis is a great guy, as well as his wife, and I also enjoyed my three carousel rides.

I want to thank the Merry-go-round museum for their continued contributions to restoration and exhibition, as well as bringing this presentation to Sandusky.

See ya at the point!

Not much for me to add, except it was a great presentation and I hope they have more events like this in the future.

Presentations like this would make great events at the park during the summer.

I was the girl in the white sweater and baseball cap. I sat next to Pete and in front of Tyler and his friend. It's nice to put some faces with these screen names.

I enjoyed the presentation very much, especially for the Boeckling anecdotes.

I stayed in town an extra day so I could visit the antique shops. CP collectibles have really exploded in price the past few years.
