Took the kids to Soak City yesterday. My four year old son is now brave enough to try the taller slides at Splash Zone---he took on the enclosed tube slide near the top, and wanted to go again, but it was time for us to head out. He also has conquered his fear of the "not so lazy river" (Renegade River), and enjoyed bobbing in the midst of the wave pool, with a few waves breaking over his head. Given that he started out his day not wanting to get his head wet, I had a surprisingly fun time---I assumed I'd just be standing around watching him play in kiddie pools all day.
To compensate, I had a hard time keeping track of his sister the six-year-old thrillseeker. She has a tendency to just head off in search of fun, without too much regard for where I am. She really wants to try the lily pad walk, but the water depth is just shy of the top of her head. So, until she's willing to do the deep water test at our neighborhood pool---or she grows another half foot---no dice. Perhaps that will be the motivation she needs. She has the ability, but hasn't been willing to cross that threshhold yet.
We arrived about noon to a lot 1/3 full. The back lot was well over 3/4 full when we left, and it was a perfect day for SC. Cloudless, hot (high of 90 or so), but low humidity. Based on the front lot, I'd say the crowd overall was moderate, but not heavy.
As long as you weren't intent on riding the major slides, Soak City was perfectly pleasant. A bit tough to get a tube at the wave pool, but enough room. Splash zone wasn't overcrowded, and the rivers were busy, but not terribly so. Even the slides didn't look horrendous, with the exception of Zoom Flume (most of the afternoon---it was down earlier) and Eerie Falls (before about 3:30 or so).
We left SC about 4:45, which gave us enough time for a relaxing meal---with the 25% discount at Breakwater, and considering I was already back there, it seemed an obvious choice, despite my recollection of so-so lunch/dinner selections. It looks like they've upgraded the menu since I was last back there for something other than breakfast---which, admittedly, was maybe the '03 season. But, the menu now has ribs and---more importantly---perch, both in platter and sandwich form. Both are on the pricey side ($18 and $10 IIRC), but with the JCC discount, they are decent deals. The fish was a bit heavier on the breading than I usually prefer, but the fish seemed fresh. Tasty stuff!
As an aside, the kids spaghetti and meatballs could feed two or three kids, easily, *and* comes (oddly enough) with a mountain of french fries.
