4-D should be next

We can pretty much assume that the next big coaster at CP will be either a florless or a 4-D. With CP's main competitor, Six Flags Magic Mountain, recently getting X, one would conclude that CP would be more interested in building one of those.
Might have to disagree with you one this one for a couple reasons.

1. I think it's hard to assume anything about what CP is getting next, I doubt many people were saying "they're either getting a floorless or 420 foot rocket this year".

2. After TTD's problems and with X's problems, I think CP will go with a more reliable design for their next ride. I'm not saying they won't get a 4-D, I just think it's quite unlikely.

I don't think we can assume anything. I hate to say it, but you are going to get the whole "ass out of you and me" and the "Cedar Point is not in compitition with Magic Mountain" sayings again.

Frankly, I think the point should stay away from both of those kinds of rides. I'd rather see something new that neither of the parks have.

Cedar Point and Magic Mountain in competition? Thats like one of those rivalry football games where the same team blows out the other team year after year....

"It's a blowout folks!" and CP is your winner :)

Actually, Cedar Point does advertise itself in California. Over the summer I was at Pier 39 in San Franscisco, and in an arcade they have there, there was a mini simulator type of ride. The chair you sat in facing a screen moved around, so that it simulated riding a coaster. As it turned out, you could choose from 6 different Cedar Point coasters. I think they were Magnum, Mantis, Iron Dragon, Meanstreak, Blue Streak, and I can't recall the last one.

Coreym,

that's not Cedar Point advertising. That's a separate company who creates these roller coaster simulators. The arcade bought the machine from this company, and it coincidentally had Cedar Point's coasters. It's not a marketing tool from Cedar Fair LP.

Seth,

I have to disagree with you. I am positive that the motion simulator company had to pay Cedar Fair to use the designs, and Cedar Point looked at it as an advertising opportunity.

It is almost exactly the same as word of mouth. People would ride the simulator, and if they liked it enough, they would try to get to the amusement park that the rides came from. Just like you telling someone about something, so they want to do it... same concept... its advertising.

Jeff, ya better close this one, like you closed mine, its almost identical!

The next coaster will be MF jr.

Don't tell me what to close, son, nobody knows you well enough or cares about you enough to pick on you.

4D... brilliant idea. Two years later X is still down as much as it's up, and the capacity sucks.

If CP were to build a new coaster it wouldn't be till 2005 season and the technology might be better for a 4-D ride. At this point we're all making guesses as to what they will/will not place at the park. On a personal note I think the park should explore the possibility of a 4-D ride. It could be good for CP and it could be good for the region. I know that there could be a chance that a 4-D ride wouldn't be reliable but I think CP could take that chance. In theory TTD has been fixed of all its problems but we won't know that till next season. Wouldn't it be nice to have say in what CP built for their next coaster?? :)

I hate the 4-D coaster. You can't really see where you are going at all. Some may like not seeing where they are going but, the feel of going through a head chop or that view on a air-time hill is what I like.
Have you ever been on X? I doubt that anyone having ridden it would say the same thing. I haven't ridden it yet, but to me it looks spectacular.

Jeff- I'd be pretty confident that the second gen. 4Ds, if we ever see them, would be a vast improvement over X. I would think Arrow would have learned a lot from their mistakes with X.

X is a very unique ride that has an amazingly positive response from its riders. The argument that CP would never build one because of reliability has pretty much lost its steam after our big, yellow Intamin friend this year.

I think I could comfortably make a wager that Cedar Point has at least considered an Arrow 4D at some point.

What I meant is that it's not an active form of advertising in the West Coast market. Obviously, the simulator company had to license the designs and logos from Cedar Point, but I don't think Cedar Fair has control over placement and location of the simulators. That is a good analogy to word of mouth, but hardly makes Cedar Point and any West Coast park competitors.

No matter what it is not advertising because advertising in any form is paid for. Since it is obvious that Cedar Point did not pay to have these simulators placed it cannot be advertising.

(Sorry, just the business major side of me talking.)

The arcade simulators are definitely advertisement for CP; there is no argument there. Seth was careful in that he recognized it was advertisement, but that it wasn't advertisement specifically from CP to compete with western coast parks.

Scott, you're missing a huge concept in advertising. Advertising is any form of communication that recognizes a product, service, company, etc. Advertisement does not have to be paid for---that's far from the truth. Want an example? Clothing stores. Does Abercrombie, American Eagle, Gap, etc. pay their customers to flaunt brand names that have extreme effects on others? No, actually, customers pay these companies to wear their advertisements.

Honestly, I don't think the park will be foolish enough to build a type of coaster that is still plagued with excessive downtime. After the headaches they have dealt with from the GP about TTD's downtime, I see them going with a company known for reliability and durability (I won't mention names). Albeit that TTD has been running very well recently, don't forget it was closed for about a month earlier this season. That's a big hit (not only to the GP, but CP in the eyes of the consumer).

But X was FUN. Real fun. Unfortunatly, I doubt we'll see one at Cedar Point (or anywhere else for that matter) until they can bring up capacity and keep the damn thing running. I wouldn't complain if they put one in at CP, though.

Quite the contrary, John. I would expect that after the Dragster nonsense they'd be less likely than ever to take a chance on any new technology that hasn't really been proven a reliable performer.
