1970's CP MAP...what year is this thing?

But note that the Wave Swinger (#34 on Fordman's map) is indeed present in the Auctionwatch map, too.  Look below Shoot the Rapids....see that round thingy in the clearing with little swings hanging from it?  There ya go.

So its prescence and Oceana's absence would presumably nail the Auctionwatch map's year to 1979, too.

Hmmm......maybe I'm not so foggy after all.

EDIT: Whoops---while I'm not exactly foggy, I didn't squint at the maps long enough. The Wave Swinger is a smaller circle thingy to the right of the big circle thingy present in both maps.  So thanks to Fordham's map, we can definitively date this map to 1978.

Look again. On the AuctionWatch map, there is one circle in that clearing - the Frontier Carousel. In the 1979 map that I posted, there are two circles ... one for the carousel and one for Wave Swinger.

There is no way that AuctionWatch map is anything other than 1978.

I was looking through my old pictures and I came across a postcard from Cedar Point that shows the Gemini's construction...in 1978.  There is no snow present so I rule out the winter, but the trees are still dead, so it must be early spring.  There is a good portion of the track built, so my guess is, it opened for the 1978 season.  No earlier than that.  I can't place the year before that, but there's my two cents of a starting date.  You've already figured it out, so oh well!

Ahem, CoastaPlaya, it's Fordman. DBCahill also made that mistake. Wait, mistake? What am I thinking? I know, you're trying to INSULT me!!

What do you mean by it being my map? I did not start this thread.

No insult intended.  When I insult anyone, there's no question whether or not they've been insulted...only whether or not their hair's caught on fire. :P

I remember 1978 all too well because my Dad chose to take us to PKI instead of CP.  Wrong....all wrong.  We missed Gemini's debut @ CP and then missed the Beast's debut the following year.  In future years, we would visit DL 4 months too early for Big Thunder Railroad, WDW 3 months to early for Epcot and WDW again too early for MGM Studios.  Did I mention I'll probably pass SFOG a week or two before Superman opens, too?

The GEMINI did open in 1978 but not in time for Opening Day...Due to an extremely harsh winter construction was delayed. The ride actually opened in early June (I beleive it was a Sunday).

And by looking at the MAP (brochure) in question it is definetely 1978's.

I have a Full size 4-color map from 1980 which is unbelievable to look at and compare CP today to CP then...Damn now all you "kids" have me feeling old...time to go polish the cane....

I guess I can see that you were not trying to insult me.

Just a minor question: When was Frontier Lift removed? Obviously after 1978...

1986, the same year as Thunder Canyon. The year after that, Iron Dragon was built partly on the spot of one of the loading stations.

Hey Joe E...I am too lazy to search for the thread regarding the "location of the Iron Dragon vs Frontier Lift Loading Station" but...

The Iron Dragon station, and lines are on the spot formally occupied by The Western Cruise and part of the area was The Monster...

The area where the Lift station was is more in line with the "patio" out back of Coasters and Coasters itself.

I think it is 1978, not that it matters anymore. Very interesting about the Iron Dragon. Did the Frontier Lift go over CCMR? Lastly, are there any footers or anything left of FL, or the old Shoot-the-Chutes ride? One more thing, what was the differance between that and the Mill Ride?

Proud Owner of a certain 1978 Cedar Point Map;)

There are some parts left in the boneyard, but no footers that I know of or have seen. Nothing is left of Shoot-the-Rapids. The main difference between that and the Mill Race were the boats. Mill Race's look like logs, while Shoot-the-Rapids' look more like a rowboat.

Say it ain't so...

Actually there is a lot of Shoot The Rapids left:)

On WWL as you go up the 1st little hill, right before the Cave...the two water pumps on your right are the old MAIN pumps from STR...PLus you can see part of the cement flume which was for the water runoff.

Besides the difference in "boats vs logs"...STR was longer...had a DOUBLE Hill which had TWO drops...As I remember the A-side always had the larger splash.

Also, STR was a much larger ride in capacity, and number of crew members. The STR crew was the largest all male crew in the park at the time and boy did that turn into alot of invites to crew parties...but that is for a different post.

Check out the gallery of GTTP I am sure Jeff has a photo of Shoot-The-Rapids...Be sure to notice the "cool" Western Style uniforms we got to wear.

OTT

Who had the pleasure of working both Shoot-The-Rapids (1980), and The Mill Race (1981)

Hmm... I guess I haven't ridden WWL in a long time. The last time was 1998. Funny how I didn't seem to remember that...

Hey guys, I bought the map. I'm going to get some better scans soon, and you will see. The round thing that was mentioned as Wave Swinger isn't. It's the glass blowing shop. Look for some scans soon.

Tim, who hopes to work at Cedar Point one day and understand half of this site.

I like the angle of the old maps. Like that one from 1979. Hard to believe how little they had back then compared to today, but the drawings of the rides and stuff is much more accurate and well done.

MFRules asked,

Did the Frontier Lift go over CCMR? Lastly, are there any footers or anything left of FL, or the old Shoot-the-Chutes ride?

Yes, the "descent/ascent" of the Frontier Lift went right over the lift hill on CCMR. If you look to your right as you climb the CCMR lift, you'll still see (although most is gone since the construction of MF) the "clearing" path where the Frontier Lift towers were on the (once bigger) island. If you've ever noticed when you walk down the exit ramp of CCMR, the ramp is covered...presumably, to prevent anything "dumped" out of a Frontier Lift cabin from hitting you on the head.

If anyone is looking for absolutely GREAT pictures of old CP rides, or layouts to the old brocheures *hint*hint*, I would recommend the site "Cedar Point on Laker Erie: An American Tradition." I came across this site this other day... it's an awesome trip into the CP past -- definitely check it out if you're interested in the history of the park.

I believe this is ok with the Terms of Service, I hope. I have a bunch of souvenir maps I have collected over the years on my site. I'm still scanning them in, but if you are interested you can look at them.

(If this is not acceptable, I'l be ok with it deleted. ;))
