You use the pen to write the songs in that little strip of paper, that you recorded off the radio, including the DJ talking at the beginning & end. When a song ended, you pressed record & play simutaneously and hoped the next song would be good. At the end of the tape the last song would be cut off midway, especially Freebird or Green Grass & High Tides.

Fail.
That particular pen exactly fits the spindle of the cassette, meaning you can use it to rewind the tape manually after your car stereo tries to eat it.
