It's not really an abbreviation, considering typing "SV" is a lot easier. And if you're speaking, what's the caloric savings of using "Steven" versus "Steel Vengeance?" Probably 0.00126% of an elephant ear. I did the math. :-)

Let's be honest here - you're not abbreviating. You're trying to convince people (perhaps including yourself) just how clever you are. And it's having the opposite effect.

The only thing more corny than the name Millennium Force is using Millie as a nickname for it. Maggie instead of Magnum is my second least favorite nickname.

"Hey, who wants to go ride a couple of old ladies?" UGH!

I think you underestimate the good-naturedness of the post. 😃

Sorry Coast, out of all the so called abbreviations that attempt to be cute or a play on words, that one is the most annoying. It's Steel Vengeance, big and bad, not some cutsie attempt at cleverness.

Besides, Steel Venom will always be the original SteVen.

In my book shortening the name is fine. Dragster, Magnum, Backlot. At a SF park it is almost mandatory, who is really going to say Batman: The Ride, Mr. Freeze Reverse Blast or Wonder Woman: Golden Lasso Coaster?

So I’m guessing to some the following are equally unacceptable and annoying: The tall one, the blue one, the other blue one that sucks, the new one, the green one...

Only because "Tall", "Blue", and "New" could mean at least a couple different roller coasters.

Sorry I forgot sarcasm smiley.

However, from overhearing people shout in the midways, it seems that’s how a good portion of the guests distinguish the rides.

I don't really get annoyed with nicknames or shortened names. But, for some reason I do get aggravated when I hear people (who I assume haven't been to the park in a while) looking for one coaster actually name two coasters. I've heard people looking for "Magnum Force" and "The Iron Raptor". And it probably shouldn't annoy me because, as I said, they really probably aren't that familiar.

This made me laugh, as when the hubby and I are separated at the park and looking to meet back up he will call and ask me where I am. I have often times said "I'm over by the blue coaster." Sometimes I just like to aggravate him!

Looking at the post the only reason I can see these nicknames are wrong is because the lacking the word The in front of them...

The SteVen.

The Millie.

The Maggie.

Now they're acceptable to use!

(disclaimer: sarcasm, I HATE the nickname SteVen, SteVe, etc... )

I actually don't mind the nicknames for the rides. But what does piss me off(sometimes) is when people put 'the' before a ride's name. Like The top thrill Dragster. The MaXair. The Skyhawk. The Millennium Force. I actually have a few nicknames I use:

Mags=Magnum XL 200

Solo/BFS(Big F**kin' Swingset)/Sky=Skyhawk

Maximum Air=MaXair

'Seeker/Windy=Windseeker

raven=Valravn

The buzz=Pointbuzz

Streaker=Blue Streak

Yeah, that's all I got.

Steel Vengeance rides: 224

I'd rather be sailing

My nicknames:

BS = Blue Streak

Val = Valravn

X3 = maXair

Down for WindSeeker = WindSeeker

Drag Queen = Top Thrill Dragster

Tetsu Ryu = Iron Dragon (long story with this)

Pasta = Rougarou

I also have one for Magnum, but this is a family-friendly forum :)

I've never felt a need to use nicknames for a roller coaster. I mean, it's a ride. With a name. It doesn't care what it's called. Using the name is fine and just as easy. I can understand shortening things if it's prohibitively long...but the only thing I ever catch myself doing that with is Top Thrill Dragster. I've called it Dragster a bunch, I'm sure.

ā€œWelcome to The Raptor!ā€ spieler Friday afternoon. Doesn’t help when the ride hosts do this.
