planning a trip--need help and advice

My husband and I are planning our first trip to Cedar Point for late July, something we have talked about for two years. I am a bit overwhelmed by the amount of information and choices! We need some basic advice--what are some of the best hotels to stay at (in all price ranges), any hotels offer shuttles, how many days should we do the CP, is Soak City worth it, is a car rental needed (we are flying into Cleveland)--or can we get by with shuttles and taxis, whata re the best/least crowded days, any don't miss events or shows (other than the coasters) and has anyone stayed in the campgrund cabins at CP? Thanks for your help!

I just returned from a trip to CP. We stayed at the Clarion Inn. We paid $50/night, and it was great. It has nice, large, very clean rooms, an indoor pool, (which we used...it was so hot, we left the park in the mid afternoon when it was really hot and returned once the sun had set a bit!) and it's just a really nice place to stay in general. A lot of people will tell you to stay at Breaker's Express for a cheap room, but I noticed the advertised rate for it while I was there was $89. Almost $40 more per night. The Clarion doesn't have a shuttle to the park, and it's a bit farther away, but not too far -- just a few miles. We really enjoyed staying there, and I highly recommend it!

The Cabins are awesome. They have a swimming pool, A/C, a pier, beach, and a water playground for kids.

Soak City is pretty cool. Especially if it's hot. It's a nice place to cool off, relax, and have fun. They even have a swim up bar.

The shows are all in taste. There are several great shows along the Frontier Trail. There is a nice Laser Show at 10:00 PM. Other than that, you can catch a bite to eat and watch some good shows at Red Garter Saloon and Johnny Rockets.

If you stay at the CP Resort, I would look into package deals for tickets and rooms/cabins.

I have stayed outside the park (in Hotels and Campgrounds) and stayed on CP property.

It depends on what you want and what you can afford, really.

Staying at a CP resort is the best expirence, be it Camper Village or a CP Hotel. But it will cost you more.

I am headed back to Camper Village in Aug :)

We have stayed at the Holidome, Breakers, Bay Shore Inn, and the Mecca Motel, plus Camper Village. It is hard to beat the rates at the Mecca. The owner told us it's 50 years old, but it's clean & comfortable, and maybe one mile to CP. They have a shuttle, and there is an outdoor pool. There are CP packages, if you don't have the CP book with the coupons. As for days to visit, we always try for a Sunday night Starlight, since the daytrippers have to head home for some zzzzzz before being wage slaves the next day. Call the 800 numbers for the chains, then go Sun-Thurs. You'll have a great time! There is nowhere as beautiful as the peninsula setting, with the water as a backdrop to the coasters. As for the shows, we salute the hard-workin' entertainers, but we are born to ride.
