Elevator Lift Question

How far can you build a elevator lift? With chain lifts the only limits are weight, but, with the elevator, that's not a problem. is the only limit to a elevator, the price?

Well, since it's very similar technology to a standard cable elevator, I'd imagine you could use super strong cables and pull a train to at least the height of the Sears Tower...or around 1400 feet. (since there's elevators there.) There will never be a coaster that tall, so I don't think that we'll ever reach a limit for coaster lift mechanisms.

Speaking of Jmans topic of elevator lifts on the Sears Tower, if you want a rush than get into one of their elevators. You will appreciate what an elevator can do. I dont think MF can compare to this.

Yeah, I went in those elevators, and it accelerated so fast that I could barely jump, then on the way down, it added a few inches. Jman, I GAURANTEE there will be a roller coaster that talle SOMEDAY, but no time soon.

Elevator jumping! It probably would feel cool, but many of those elevators have detectors that might stop the elevator if people do it. (I'm not saying you did, but it sounds like it)

I remember seeing something on Discovery or TLC about the elevators used in the World Trade Center... they're not straight up. (Please, forgive me if I'm off on my info [which I probably am], but I haven't seen the show in some time, and start school tomorrow. Brain == hazed.) They can only go up so far before they have to be transferred over to another shaft.

Somebody want to explain this in more detail, or am I just drunk on American Fare Cola, and this is all my imagination?

The cool thing about the Sears Towers elevators is you go from the ground floor nonstop to the observatory floor. There are no stops in between. I dont know about the World Trade Center but this elevator goes straight to the top without transferring. It is a rush!!!!!!!!!

I don' think there will be coasters much over about 500 feet tall.
1. They're too expensive at that height, and they take up way too much room.
2. After a certain height, the trains will reach their terminal velocity, making it fairly pointless to go much higher, since the rest of the route still won't be able to go higher (so, say a 400 foot second hill would be the max).
3. I can't see a coaster hill structure actually standing stably at 1400 feet. the CN tower is a little taller than that, but it sways nearly 3 feet in normal wind. That much on a roller coaster would be just a little too much.

Superman UE has a ten foot sway. Tha alone is just from the train.

I don't think anyone would have thought a three hundred foot coaster was possible twenty years ago. Then again people didn't believe it the year before either. ;)

Granted, it would still be expensive, but a 500' drop without a 500' structure is a lot cheaper. Go down a ravine or a hill. Something like that.

Hey Lynch, simple enough, build a coaster in the Grand Canyon.

Have any of you heard of Terminal Volocity. It is the fastest any falling object on earth can drop. 112MPH is it. After the coaster dropped 500 feet it would stop accelerating. Which means you would not feel weightless. You would feel 1G like you are just sitting on the ground.

P.S. I'm Leaving from Minnesota to go to the Point for the second time tomorrow
