Magnum's Bunny Hops

CrystalKat

It might just be me, but I've noticed over the past few years that the bunny hop hills on Magnum seem to be getting more and more painful (via harsh lap bars). When the coaster opened, I don't remember it being that way! Have the restraints changed over the years? They could certainly use some padding!

Not that I know of, but I did have a bad experience about 2 years ago when I didn't lock the lap bar all the way. That was the most painful coaster ride I've ever been on. This is sad though, because not I always lock it down tight to prevent another one of those incidents, so I don't get a lot of air.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the lap bars lack padding entirely the first year?

Every ride on Magnum is different, like a box of chocolates (shrimp soup, shrimp salad...), unlike a B&M ride that delivers the same thing every time. Magnum's many factors include weather, wind and most notably wheel condition.

Jeff, I have noticed that also, every single ride on Magnum is differnt, some times it's realy smooth, other times it's a little bumpier(spelling) than normal.

When I was at CP in May, I had the most unbelievable Magnum ride ever. I walked off absolutely dumbfounded. In the 25 times I'd ridden Magnum I'd never had a ride that good. I went again earlier this month, and it wasn't nearly as good. Still good, but nowhere near the ride I had in May. Of course, the MF ride in the front car more than made up for it. :)

It is amazing how many wooden traits Magnum has.

I had the best rides EVER on Magnum at Coastermania. It was running fast, there was a nice breeze off of the lake, and let's just say that the ejector seat that night ROCKED!

If I'm not mistaken, the interior of the cars lacked padding ANYWHERE when if first opened! It wasn't until the first or second year of operation that padding on both the seats/sides and the bars started to appear. If you think it's painful now, you should of rode it the opening year of 1989!!

Oh....there wasn't any seatbelts either!!

....And what's the deal with seatbelts on the scrambler?????... Pretty soon they'll be virtually tieing you down with bungie straps to "keep you in your seat for safety measures"...

Jerry would be the man to ask, but during the big two week shut down opening year when the lift chain broke they added padding.

Urban legend is that when the park cracked the crates open that held the trains they saw that there was no padding. The response from arrow was "we didn't think the trains would need any."

CP_bound, those Magnum rides at CoasterMania were AWSOME. Usualy on the camel humps on the return run you are out of your seat but OMG!!!!! That was the most air I have ever had (keep in mind I have yet to ride Shivering Timbers).

The above responses are why, in my opinion, Magnum is the best steel coaster in the world. A hypercoaster with the personality of a classic wooden out-and-back? C'mon, BEAT THAT.

Those rides were so COOL!

I freaked out my friend on the turnaround, because I was hanging so far out, that when he looked over at me, all he saw was my right arm up in the air.

Magnum's bunnies have always been intense. I haven't noticed them getting any rougher with age. In fact, I find Magnum more comfy now than I did 7 years ago.
[Of course, I was 12, and Magnum threw me around like a ragdoll in a tornado.]

i haven't noticed any change over the years. Really i think it has more to do with where the lap bar is and where u're sitting. Pain or not, i still luv'em

Shorti2443

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Magnum used to have those orange ratcheting lap bars that are on Blue Streak?? I think i remember those and then the next year they changed them to what they are now. The same ones that are on Gemini.

No, I'm pretty sure the lap bars were the same on Magnum, just bare black metal when it opened.

What is Magnum defined as, layout-wise? Closest I can come is 'Dogleg Out and Back'.

To answer the original question, the Magnum's bunny hops (or at least one of them) were reconfigured shortly after the ride opened. I believe I remember reading in the Register that some lady had gotten hurt due to the intensity of the hills. At least one hop was replaced and the track section that was no longer used was placed in a "Magnum" garden along the Midway to promote the ride.
