The Beach

Could anyone who has stayed at Breakers report on the beach conditions, water level, water quality, etc. Thanks

There is a nice wading pool. Some people call it Lake Erie.

The beach is in great condition. I've never seen it otherwise, except outside of the operating season.

You can go out for quite a ways into the lake before it gets really deep, and the bottom is almost entirely sand -- very little rocks or anything in it, so it is very nice to walk on. Water quality isn't so bad, just as bad as any other freshwater lake I guess. They do clean it up periodically and comb the sand and stuff like that, so it always looks great.

Don't know about the water levels this year, but last year when I went into the water, the water only came up to my knee caps the furthest out I could go by the ropes.

That's the way it is this year, Vince. If the view for the lifeguards is the issue, then why not put chairs a little offshore?

The beach is beautiful, the sand is very clean, and the water conditions are fine, BUT they ruin it by only allowing you out into the lake for a very short distance. I remember swimming at the beach in the 60’s and 70’s where you can go out very far into the lake, to water that was at least 6’ or 7’ feet deep. The shape of the bottom made it excellent for body surfing or raft surfing on days with nice swells in the lake. The view of the lifeguards didn’t seem to be an issue back then, they even had a rescue boat for the lifeguards to use. This is a BIG sore spot with me at CP. If the resorts can charge $250 dollars and up for a night in a suite, I expect more then knee deep water at the beach. If the consulting company CP uses to train lifeguards can’t come up with a way to implement this, then CP should contact some of the lifeguard departments on the east and west coasts. They don’t seem to have a problem with guests going out into deep water, they can maybe show CP how to do it right. Everything about CP is world class except the beach swimming area. The Great Lakes have many of the nice qualities of the ocean, without a lot of the more dangerous aspects of ocean swimming. CP could run a world class beach to match the other operations they have, but they don’t seem to get how important that is to some guests.

I was there June 6th,7th, and 8th and noticed a lot of dead fish on the shore.

Also there were a couple of kids that went beyond the roped off area and the life guards quickly blew wistles and yelled when that didnt work they walked all the way out to the ropes and told them to come back.

I know that at the best of times the western basin of Lake Erie has an avarage depth of only 22 ft.(excepting the shipping channel) and lake levels are extremely low this year

Good comments Pete. Checked out your photo, great shot, are those cops behind you? Hope you weren't driving anyway. I live near the north coast of Lake Erie and it bothers me to no end that CP is only 30 miles as the crow flies but to drive there takes almost 2 hours! I've got to convince Kingsville Ont and Sandusky OH to build a bridge soon....anyone want to start a petition? I'll certainly sign it!!
