theming...

i know cedarpoint doesent really need a lot of theming,but when i viseted six flags last week,just about everywhere i looked there was eye candy,and it was great.i know the point has the best coasters in the world,but come on,lets throw in some eye candy to make a great experiance even better.does anyone know why they dont?

beacause there ranked the #1 Park without it..and i do think they have themed areas to a point and do a great job of catering to the senses!!

If Cedar Point ever looked like SFO (with the exception of BoomTown), I probably would stop going.

Cedar Point is generally known as an Amusuement Park (like Kennywood, for example), rather thatn a Theme Park (like Six Flags)

Although one thing bugs me... whenever anyone talks about CP and theming, they only mention the campy theming of Disaster Transport. What about Frontier Trail, White Water Landing, Mine Ride and Frontier Town? That whole area is packed with theming, and IMO is done very well (Age has helped that area tremendously...)

Not to mention the excellent theming in Camp Snoopy...

In fact I thought Camp Snoopy was very "campy". LOL! ;)

I think that Frontier Trail's theming is very well done. Complete with themed buildings, shade, steam trains, a couple of water rides with themed stations, and themed coasters.(Well at least CCMR is)

I would think since CP is so old and has weathered through it all, it has become more of a traditional amusement park like Kennywood. RPerz made a good point. CP has classic midways, forks in the walkways, and to a newtimer at CP, all of this seems really confusing. That is what a "traditional" amusement park is all about. Most Six Flags parks have that loop thing where you don't get to choose where you go or take shortcuts to anywhere, you just walk.

Where theming is displayed, it is done very well. (with the exception of DT) Frontier Town is done great, fully equipped with cedar roofs on buildings and sometimes even completely overgrown with moss. All of the rides reflect this too and it is very well done.

I remember going to CP and riding DT when all of the nifty things in the queue were working and *nothing was being hidden* I remember that little alien dude that talked and all of the other neat props and most of that is not visible anymore and takes a lot of the mood out of riding.

Something I've wondered about for awhile: I've been to Disney and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, and their theming is SUPERB. But when I go to CP, I wonder if they would dare do it? Look around when you go through the Mean Streak queues sometime, and notice all the gum all over the place! And the pine tree in the Magnum queue as you start up the stairs looks like a Christmas tree with it. It might look great, but I wouldn't dare put up theming -- who knows what would happen to it, and how hard it would be to keep looking clean and nice!

As for Disaster Transport, I agree it used to look MUCH better, and working the ride I learned that they really aren't inclined to do anything about it. The second room was closed down and stuffed with Halloweekends props, and the light isn't supposed to be on at the brake platform after the satellite. Hopefully if the boardwalk project goes through, they'll fix up the ride too, and make it as good as it used to be!

SixFlags parks have theming...besides Bugs Bunny? huh? I do hope the boardwalk project gives the park a theme area.

Cedar Point is excellent at theme. They are just very bad at special effects. Need I remind you that they went out of there way to make the Force fit in with the trail. As well as keeping the themes on Thunder Canyon, Paddlewheel, and CP&LE.

The problem is that the park only has two remaining consistent theme areas. The Space theme of the area by DT is still there but staggering. The pirate midway is gone. The parks new snoopy theme is not tied to one area but rather scattered throughout the park making it not a true theme and although the Frontier areas are still there, there are a couple of attractions that do not fit. The park does not have signs announcing it's theme as well.

That pisses me off...sorry folks.Six Flags...geez I can go off on them for years to come.They are the worst theme park in history.I was on the coaster accident website and they have the MAJORITY of all theme park accidents since 1970.
Doesnt that tell you something?They close half their rides without posting it so you are stupid running around their park looking for these rides to be open and they arent.THEMEING????I can create better themeing with RCT.All I noticed is warner Brothers everywhere and that gets annoying after a while.A great park does not I REPEAT DOES NOT need a lot of themeing.Dorney Park is relatively a good park with limited themeing and Hershey doesnt really go overboard either.BUT SF???Dont even get me started.

CrystalKat, Disney has A LOT of theming. I agree, it does look really good, they just lack about everything CP has, though. As for Busch GARDENS (*hint*hint*) Those parks were started by the Anheiser(sp) Busch Corp. as gardens, and only gardens people could look at. So the original park goes back to where it was ALL theming. Later rides got added, but they kept up with the theming part of it because it was what the park were built on. Then other Busch Gardens park were created...etc..etc

That's true, the Busch parks were gardens to start, but so was CP -- they just don't have the room to keep them! But CP is lacking a bunch of the things that Disney has too, like a lot of more family-oriented stuff that you can do with your kids no matter what their height. I'm neither for nor against - no kids, and I love the coasters so CP is definately my favorite! I was just wondering how difficult it would be to keep the theming clean.

The thing is, Disney and BG* are essentially theme parks with coasters. CP is an amusement park with some themes. There is a difference there.

The rides, attractions, and great scenery theme the park in itself. With the addition of Camp Snoopy, the Frontier Trail, ect...it works out great. Having a beach, great skyline, beautiful lake, and great collection of rides and scenery is all that Cedar Point needs to theme.

This thread reminds me of the "theme park vs. traditional park vs. parks with TPM" discussions of old on r.r-c.

Bonus points to anyone who knows what TPM is.

I don't say why anybody in their right mind could say tha themeing would improve the park. I mean here is how I look at it. I would much rather sit under a shady tree eating french ries at Kennywood or Cedar Point than sitting a themed area with a guy in a Bugs Bunny costume dancing around try to entertain me.

I think Cedar Point has a big theme that we all are forgetting. Disney World's is obviously Disney movies and characters and Six Flags has tried to copy that with Warner Brothers characters. The main themeing is what the use and advertise to draw people in. As long as I can remember Cedar Point's main themeing has been been it's roller coasters (America Roller Coast, etc.). Where the other parks are using characters to draw people in, Cedar Point uses there rides (which is what most people go for anyways). I perfer that themeing then a bunch of grown men and women running around in costumes.

Hello??? Anyone remember the Peanuts costumes!! Think before you post!!

Yes, they have the Peanuts characters, but they are not using them as themeing like six flaggs does with warner brothers does. At least half or more of their parks are based on Warner brothers and that is what they advertise. They hope that hearing the name Superman or Batman than you will asociate and want to come and ride that ride. Cedar Point has a little section of the park for peanuts but they do not use that to try and bring people in. If they were like Six Flags Millennium Force would have probly been called Charlie Brown's Football Kick. I have not seen any people dressed up in Peanuts characters, but I don't go into Camp Snoopy or the play ground. My brother who lives by Six Flags said you can't walk around without running into the people in costume. The main point is Cedar Point does not rely on the Peanuts theme like Six Flags relies on the Warner Brothers themeing.
