Haunted?

With such a long park history, you'd think CP is haunted. Do any of you have ghost stories about CP, wether it be a legend, something weird thats happened to someone you know, or your own personal experiences? Nothing has happened to me, unfortunatly, but I think it would be interesting to hear what people have to say.

Ive read a few stories..such as the Giant Wheel and Demon Drop being haunted

I used to work overnight at the park. It is a completely different place in the middle of the night. I actually enjoyed it, though it's pretty creepy in places!

Anyway, to answer your question, there are many stories. The most famous is probably the old Frontiertown Carousel. There are assorted other tales as well.

I too have heard something about the Giant Wheel. Supposedly, at midnight, if you close your eyes and say "bloody wheel" 5 times and then look up at the wheel, you will see a rider fall to her death from the top car. A friend of mine did this. He has since never been the same.

I've heard the legend of the military horse on the old frontier carosel.

I've heard a somewhat similar "Giant Wheel" story.. though.. never once believed it for a second.... apparently, (now.. this is the FAR-fetched story talking, not me) the year the wheel opened, a teenage couple was riding when the girl broke up with the guy (of course, when I heard the story.. they made it much more dramatic.. you're getting the short version) .. completely heartbroken, the guy jumped out of his gondola from the top of the wheel... during his fall, the body hit the supports of the wheel, and knocked the rotation backward 1/4 turn. Apparently, now at 1am every night (yeah, right) the wheel does a backwards 1/4 turn.

Uhm.. yeah...

One other time this was brought up, and it was said that the Breakers hotel was haunted. I don't know about this myself, but someone else might.

what's the story on the military horse on the carousel?? i want to hear it..i love these kinds of things...Chigago is one of the most haunted cities in the USA and i love to hear about other places and their stories/legends..

Supposedly this is how it goes I'll give the short version. The guy who was carving the horse at the time discovered that his wife was cheating on him. Well the knife he was using on the horse he supposedly used the same knife to kill his wife. After he killed her he stuffed her heart in the horse. As folklore goes the carosel used to start up at night with no one around and would run by itself. Also it is claimed that you could not photograph the horse your film would be always blurry or not turn out. I believe that this is actually in one of those Haunted Ohio books that are out. You may have to do some research but the story is out there I may have some things twisted but hey.

Any body got anymore on the giant wheel story sounds interesting.

The Story of the Haunted Horse on the Frontier Town Carousel. (If you haven't already done so, turn out all the lights in the room)

MANY versions of this story exist, but in the one that I heard, the carver of the carousel came home from work early one day to find his wife in the arms of another man. Enraged, he killed her, using a pistol and a sabre. Sounding very similar to an Edgar Allen Poe story, the carver conceiled the murder weapons within the cavity of the body of one of the horses he was carving. He then finished carving the horse, but carved the pistol and sabre on the outside of the horse, as something of a confession.

The horse was supposedly haunted by the woman's spirit. During the last ride of the night, the woman's ghost could be seen riding that very dark brown horse. Another version said that after the park closed, the ghost would appear and the band organ would suddenly blare its music, the lights would all go on, and the carousel would spin, with HER on the horse.

Also, it was supposedly impossible to take a photograph of this horse without the picture being blurred...you know, the horse was still moving or something.

This urban legend began circulating in the late 1970's as I recall. The story was finally picked up in the media, featured in the magazine Carrousel Art (now defunct) as well as the Cleveland Plain Dealer!

The Haunted Horse was removed from the Frontier Town carousel prior to its departure to Dorney Park. The HH currently resides in the Town Hall Museum at CP.

i rember the story about being able to see car # 13 on the sky ride with the ghost of a man that had a heart attact years ago(in car 13)

The spookiest thing that I've seen at CP was last year, my friends and I were just exploring, and upon leaving that main arcade on the midway, saw some stairs on the South end of the arcade leading up to a second floor. We thought there must be something up there since it's not roped off, but nobody was going up or down, so we went up. It was day time, so it wasn't really spooky, but we just thought it was weird these stairs wouldn't say "employees only" or something of that nature if it wasn't for the public to go to, and in the whole crowded park, nobody else was going up or even noticing us. So anyway, we went up and reached the top and saw a nasty dead seagull on the ground and a big glass door and glass wall leading into a huge empty room. I later found out that there are offices up there, but it didn't look like it. It just looked like an old ballroom or something. The door was unlocked and just as we were about to enter, the nasty dead seagull hopped up and started screeching!!! Yeah right,anyway, we thought it was a spooky looking place and decided to leave the stairs and the nasty dead seagull alone.

That bloody wheel thing sounds cool, I think I will try that next time I am there when the park is open till midnite. LOL

Funny thing about the mysteriously starting carousel... A college friend of mine who worked at the park in the early 90's, prior to the carousel's move. One night after getting off at Soak City, she went to join some friends back near Thunder Canyon after close. Sure enough, the thing started up and scared the pants off of her and her friends. Right after they screamed, you could hear the laughter of the mechanics at the ride's center.

There is a replica of the haunted horse in the Merry-Go-Round musuem in Sandusky. They tell a very similar story about it.

My first summer of employment at CP (1980) I was on the Rapids crew and at closing one night one of the crew went around back of the Carrousel and as we walked up FTrail with the Wave Swinger Girls he turned the ride on! Well to say the least, the Wave swingers girls set the 800 meter world record. Still one of the funniest sites I have ever seen.

To add to the "haunted horse tale".
It was "witnessed" a number of times late in the evening a "bag lady" would ride the Frontier Lift from the main Midway toward Frontiertown. The cabin would leave the main midway with her it but arrive in FTown EMPTY.....It is believed this is the woman of the carrousel.
Also, I was always told the carrousel would run backwards for no reason when "she" rode! *** This post was edited by Old Timer Tim on 6/8/2000. ***
