Gemini 100, 2004 - Who's with me?

About 3 years ago you guys organized the Gemini 100... Unfortunately I was living in Texas at the time and couldn't make it. I've always loved running laps on the Gemini, especially late at night when people start cheering for their favorite train.

My riding partner and I always do paper, rock, scissors to determine who gets the inside seat to slap hands. Occasionally we gamble $1 on the winner. Gemini rules!!!

I'm living back in Toledo now and have a season pass for the first time. Any day would be fine. I'm wondering if there's still enough interest on this site to organize another Gemini 100.

I also want to note... I understand that the event 3 years ago was special to the 11 of you that conquered this feat and won the title of "Survivor". Congratulations. Most of you say you would never do it again. That's fine. I want this to be special for a new group of people. I ask you original survivors for any tips you could offer us. Endurance conditioning? What kind of shoes to wear? What NOT to consume... Anything you can think of. Thanks.

Gemini is only running four trains this year, so it might not even be possible to hit 100 in a day.

Yeah, the four-train-deal might make that a little tough this year, but you could probably pull off a Gemini 50 or something like that. I'd go for it though if someone gets it together (Hey, it gives me another reason to go to CP another time...), who else would be interested?

If I can go whatever day is planned, I would love to try. but as mentioned early, the new four train operation from the airgates might make it near impossible.

I think I'll go up Saturday to simulate a normal summer day (hot, humid, chance of t-storms, the usual) and do laps for about an hour, just to get a good estimate of how possible 100 would be. If everybody can get 10 in an hour on a sunny Saturday then it should be easy for 100 in a day.

I think our best bet would be on a Sunday or Monday in June. Crowds are light and we would have 12 hours. If we wait until July or August we could have 13 hours but the crowds are heavier. Still... Sunday or Monday would be the days to do it on.

Perhaps we could just rent a train and never get off... ahh... *daydreaming*... :-D

10 in an hour (especially on a sunny, summer Saturday) would be quite tough. Maybe not too much now, but in June, yes....That would mean one ride every 6 minutes. According to its page here, the ride itself is about 2:20 long, so you could only wait in line 3 minutes, plus 40 seconds to get in and out of the train (which isn't gonna happen). A sunny, summer, Sunday in June with lines that short I would love to see...and now that they re-did the station for Gemini, I bet the best you're gonna get is a Gemini 50. That'd still be fun though.

With 4 trains it might be tough. When we did the original with 6 trains, most of us made it in good time but there were a few people still scrambling in the 90's when it was close to closing time...

With changes that have been made to the operation of the ride I doubt it could ever happen again.

I wouldn't do it again and I honestly don't think it could be done again with the new airgates. Like Natalie said, most of us hit 99 with ease and there were a few who took a little longer to catch up to the pack.

Yeah, that day was great. But I won't do it again either. Wear sunscreen, don't wear sandles, and don't take breaks. That was a great group of people to do it with.

As others mention about 4 trains instead of 6, It makes quite a difference.

Even with less rides, make sure you can handle the heat & humidity.

I was there for the 100, but skipped out after 20 or 30(can't remember). It got too muggy for me. And to top it off, I had my Magnum marathon of 80+ rides the day before! :)

I think that if somebody organized it i'd be down for it. You would prolly set a CP record for most rides on Gemini in one day. That would be awsome!

Ooh, you guys sound like you're making a dare. I bet I could do it by myself! (: You're all right though, only chance would be the slow 10 hour days, and then you'd need to go awfully fast to make it.

-s

edit: On the other hand, 4th july would have 4 extra hours to try. I bet that'd be a good day to try. Then again, with even a 10 minute wait, you're only talking 6 rides per hour, or 85 or so rides for the day. Tough goal any way ya look at it. *** Edited 5/28/2004 1:52:29 PM UTC by Stimpy***

Depending on when it was, I might be interested. Even if we couldn't actually get the 100 laps, it would be fun to try.

After 4 tries on 4 different days, the most rides I got in a 2 hour period was 16. That was on a Monday. If we attempted this on a favorable day (13 hours, weekday, mostly cloudy weather), we maybe have a 50% chance of making 100. We would have to do it on short notice if the weather is a determining factor.

I think the consensus in this thread is that whether we reach 100 or not, running laps on the Gemini all day will still be a fun (although exhausting) social event. Short notice is not what we want. So today, I nominate....

... as our Gemini 100 attempt.

How about a try at a Magnum 100. the line is always short for that one

I wish I could come, but I cant drive yet. Bummer. I live in the Detroit area, and Cedar Point is not that far away. I'll get my chance to drive next year. Then, when I get the money, I can come. =P
