Cold Weather = Rollbacks

I heard that when the track is cold the steel expands or something and causes more rollbacks. I was wondering what's going to happen with TTD in Sep. and Oct. TTD prototype, Xcelerator, is in CA and is usually warm, so this might effect TTD.

Well, I'm not sure how this would affect TTD very much, but the steel will expand when it's hotter not colder.

Correct, the steel will expand in hot weather and shrink in cold weather. It is a common misconception because water expands when frozen, however it is the only element which has those characteristics. I don't have much of an opinion on whetever or not colder weather equals more rollbacks. It seems like more rollbacks would happen in warmer weather.

Well, if thats the truth, then next year you can probably expect to see twice the rollbacks. This summer was MILD to an extent on most days. One day I went, the high was around 80 and rollbacks were very frequent. I also don't really see how the track expanding would make that much of a difference on how fast the train goes.

But next year they will probably have a better cooling system.

It was cold in May and I did not see nearly as many roll backs. In fact in the two days I was there I did not see it roll back once. In June and July I saw tons.

When I was there in May it was 60 degrees tops.

60 degrees tops? Wow, I thought it would be colder in September than in May. During the last weekend in September, last year, the temperature probably averaged a good 75 degrees when the sun was out.

Changes in performance has nothing to do with the track expanding or contracting. When it is cold outside, the lubricant in the wheel bearings is thicker, so you get more friction. As the ride runs, the lubricant thins out and you get better performance.

From what I have heard, the reason they put the water cooling on the catch car is because it was overheating due to the friction of it sliding along. Rumor has it that they may get a catch car with wheels for next year.

Concerning the temperature difference between May and September, you have to remember that the lake effects temperatures greatly at CP, since it is surrounded by it. In May, the lake is still cold from winter, but by September it has been warming up all summer long. So typically, May will be cooler at the point than September, but October can get a bit chilly.
