WT with knex

Just a few days ago, I made a magneticly and electricaly powered WT with knex. First thing to do is to make the track suspedned and then find a lot of wire. Wrap the wire inside the track and have the plug sticking out as well as the object it is connected to. Then put a couple of magnets on the train (remember to make the train hang on the track) and then plug the wire in and if you do it correctly, the train should shoot foward. If you make the ride exactly like WT, then you want wires at both ends and plug them in when the train is at that end. To brake it, you have to plug both ends at the same time.

What are you using for a power source?

Yeah really. "Plug it in" sounds like "start a fire"!

I'm already wondering if there's some way to rig the new Rippin' Rocket to work as an impulse, making the launch motors reverse back and forth.

Yes, I'm aware of that, but it doesn't mean they couldn't be modified.

If the motors were DC, you could install some sort of switch that would reverse the polarity as the train passes them.

Or even better, an optical switch that does it for you when the train passes. If I was better with electronics, I'd so try that.

I think I'll just have to give this a try today. Minus the "Plug it in" thing. I have some electrical classes under my belt, but...no.

How do you make a suspended train and the twisted track? Please post a picture or diagram on how to do this because I would like the challenge of recreating the ride. Any help is appreciated!

Well I finished my Impulse coaster about 2 hours after making that last post of mine, it turned out pretty good. I'll try to get some pics up when I have the chance. It is only a "reversed standard impulse", so the twist is on the back spike, straight front spike.

Djk210, you just turn the track and train upside down, no modifications. For the twisted track you just have to design the supports with the ability to hook up track to various places as you go up the tower and twist as you go. The way I did it was more for stability than looks but it works, its almost like a box/tower going up and the track is inside of it. The front spike however, being straight, just ataches to a skinny tower, it didn't need much support.

I have the original rollercoaster set, not screaming serpent or the new launch coaster. Can I still make it with this? One more question--how does the train go up vertical track without falling off?

Djx210, it would take some creative engineering to do it with the original coaster set. I myself have the Screaming Serpent, so my train has upstop wheels.

The problem with using anything magnetic and K'nex is that the tolerances between the wheels and track are too sloppy to properly align much of anything. That in fact is why these things lose so much energy after two elements. A ton of it is lost in the trains slapping around all over the track.

I can kind of understand why they designed it like that though. If the wheels were on the track at time and there would be too much friction and the train would probably slow down even more. Remember that there are no bearings or lubrication on those wheels or axles.
