The initial speed of a coaster as it crests the lift hill has a lot less of an effect on the ultimate speed than a lot of you may think.
first, let's assume for a moment that the 92 mph speed of Millennium Force is achieved when the train is released at the top of the hill with an initial speed of 10 mph.
now ask yourself this... what would happen in these 2 circumstances:
A) the train is released with just enough speed to get over the crest(we'll call it zero mph)
B) the train is released at a speed of 25 mph
you may think that in situation A the top speed would be much less.. possibly as low as 82 mph and that in situation B the top speed would be much greater... possibly as high as 107 mph.
in fact the top speed in situation A would be right around 91.5 mph and in situation B it would be around 94.5 mph.
the reason for this is that in situation A, the train will spend just under a half second MORE time in the drop(compared to the 10 mph train) due to its lower initial speed... this extra time allows it to gain an additional 9.5 mph which almost makes up for the 10 mph lower starting speed.
in situation B, the train will spend just over a half second LESS time in the drop, which will cause it to gain about 12.5 mph less... take that 12.5 away from the 15 mph higher initial speed and you end up with a net increase of only around 2.5 mph
a faster initial speed will increase the AVERAGE speed of the drop but it will have a much smaller impact on the top speed at the bottom of the drop.
