Impulse?

What exactly is an impulse coaster? I know WT is one, but is that where it gets launced by LIMs or something along those lines?

Some of them have brakes on the back spikes (Superman: Ultimate Escape) and others (at least one) have twistage opn the back spike (Wicked Twister).
