Wind Speed?

At what wind speed will CP start closing down coasters?

Raptor was down almost the whole day, and I think the wind speed was around 10-15.

While wind speed is important I think it has more to do with WIND DIRECTION. A twenty mile an hour wind from the west would effect the Raptor different than the Blue Streak.

When the Wildcat was moved to it's present location there were problems just about everyday with a breeze coming off the bay and stopping the cars in the first little dip. As you may know there is a windscreen at the top now.

Are Raptor and WildCat the only coasters that have an adverse reaction to windspeed or are all the coasters at CP prone to some malfunction?  (Please do not touch on tornadoes as those will definitely render stuff completely immobilized.)

All coasters except DT (being enclosed) are affected by wind, depending on direction. It's a simple matter of wind resistance slowing forward movement.

MF total - 476 laps
VertiGo Launches - 79

So coasters hauling toward the wind would slow... but then the wind pushing on them from behind would be a benefit, right?

A wind off of the lake would affect Magnum and not Raptor, while a wind off of the bay would slow down Raptor, but not so much Magnum.  Magnum would be most likely to roll back if a strong wind slowed it down in the pretzal slowing it enough so that the train would not make it out of the third tunnel.  In the Magnum manual, it says that in order to run the ride with winds above 28 mph, the crew needs management approval.  In practice, when the winds kick up, we timed the trains.  If they were still running at under 62 seconds, it wasn't a problem.  If it was slower, we'd have to pull the trims (which we did a few nights for several hours leading to some awesomely fast/windy rides).  If it was slower than that with the trims off, it was more of a judgement call.  We usually judged it by the combination of timing trains and watching them as they come out of the third tunnel.  After watching thousands of trains come out of the tunnel, you hardly even need to time them, you just know if the speed is right. :)

Also, contrary to what I've heard some people mention, the trims on Magnum are not regulated by computer in relation to wind speed.  It is the responsibility of the crew to time trains and call maintenance to adjust the trims.  Sometimes in the morning, there will be some extremely fast/slow rides before the trims get adjusted.  The same is true if the wind speed or direction changes.  The optimal train timing for Magnum is about 60 seconds from the time the last car drops off of the lift to the time the front of the train enters the safety brakes outside the third tunnel.  Generally speaking, we had it between 59 and 60 seconds all year and on a few nights it was running faster than that (just ask Joe E :)).

Why are the trims there, roughness?
-----------------
Magnum may be high, but Raptor rules the sky!

Paul

Actually, they reprofiled the whole pretzel turnaround after the Coastermania of 1994(?). They raised the dip of the third drop, and installed a trim there.

The original 3rd drop was brutal, and people came back to the station with bloody noses from bashing their faces on the seats in front of them. The trims were installed to make it less wild in the turnaround, and when they are off, the ride is just insane.

Yeah Matt. Wind= Good on Magnum :). So fast Millennium Force could not dispatch!

Someone asked if the trims were to cut down on roughness. For some reason when the trims are off the pretzel is a lot smoother. I don't know why it just is! They are probably there not to kill GP peeps and to keep an interval (which the Magnum crew always seems to hit). A full train on a windless, hot day in 1-3 would have some begging for mercy.

I rode Gemini more than once during a day.

Actually I had a bloody nose at the Magnum station the first time I rode this year.  (No it wasn't bad, messy or even showing but I had to keep inhaling.)  One zip around Magnum's track and my nose was dry and sealed.  Who needs a tissue when that that steel wonder does the trick?

I know RipCord closes in 30 M.P.H. or gust of 35+ and VertiGo In 30 MPH or depending on inclination.

Well, I'm going tomorow...AND I'M VERY EXCITED! I prob. won't be able to sleep tonite cause I'll be so anxious! :)

I checked and the wind will be from the southwest.  Any probs. for coasters if the wind is from that direction?  I hope nothing gets closed down...*cough* Raptor....... ;)

I wouldn't worry. Wind from the SE at 10-15 sounds like a nice night. A REAL nice night. I'll take it for October 19th!
Sweet! I'll make sure to write a report about my trip on Sunday. I'm off to the park tomorrow!!!!  :)

I don't think we even need to go to what effect that wind has on the Sky Ride, do we?
On all Skycoasters the limit it 25mph sustained or 35+ gust. There's special wind sensor in the back room that measures all of this.

Every time I go to CP (or any park which is rare) I have a lot of trouble sleeping because of anxiousness!;)
