Is there any WiFi at Lighthouse Point?
I'm going with a really good friend for two days, and I'd like to bring along my laptop.
They have phones if that's what you're asking. In order to have dialup, you'd need to have an ISP access number and a modem on your laptop. Then you could plug into the data port on the cabin/cottage phone and dial your ISP.
They need to start up-dating the hotels to WiFi. Some of us bring boat loads of work to the park to work on during down time. I have a lap-top hooked up to the car I am driving and it would make it that much easier to send data back to the mothership after a 2 hour evaluation ride.
I was wondering if they had dial up access numbers for customers to use. I could connect to my phone using bluetooth and use DUN to get 14.4k internet access. I have some free services though.
With the demand and amount of threads around here about WiFi, I don't get why they don't just implement wireless around the park. It would only make sense.
^ Because it costs money. They didn't even want to wire a single web cam on top of Disaster Transport. I don't really see them investing in some park-wide or even resort-wide wifi system unless another company foots the bill for it.
I'm not sure why they don't do this. There are TONS of company that will put in a wireless network for free. They charge guests to use it and then give CP a portion of the profits. It's sorta a no-brainer to me. I've worked with tons of resorts that implemented systems like this for free.
Factory81, that's not how dial-up works. With dial-up, you dial YOUR ISP. All that takes is a phone with a dataport or a modular jack so you can connect your computer to the phone line. I've never heard of a hotel providing dial-up numbers and it really doesn't make any sense to do so.
That all said, we stayed at Breakers about three weeks ago and the wi-fi in the lobby was pathetic. Connecting to it on the wi-fi level was no problem but most of the time, I then could not connect to anything with my browser or e-mail. Really pathetic. Clearly something was hosed on their internet router but there didn't seem to be anybody who could contact anyone to fix it and it persisted the entire two days we were there.
OTOH, a year ago at Breakers Express it worked just great.
Larry,
You can use your cell phone to connect to your laptop using bluetooth. And bluetooth technology supports dial up networking. So My computer "dials my phone" to "dial my ISP" which connects me wirelessly anywhere I have cell phone coverage at 14.4k while using my minutes.
I have free dial-up ISP's but sometimes they can be busy.
I'm well aware of how dialup works. My point is that you dial YOUR ISP. There is no need for a hotel to provide dialup numbers - all you need is the phone jack.
But it sounds like part of your problem is that you use free ISPs with limited dialin capability. All I can say to that is you get what you (don't) pay for.
