Why only backwards??

A thought (question?) occured to me about WT so going to ask it here and see if someone can answer it. There seems to be alot of heartache with the backwards spike, various times welding being seen, (duct tape too! ;)) as well as a few times maybe the GP hasn't seen.
I guess I am wondering WHY the backwards spike would be an issue. If you think about it, the spike itself doesn't know the train is backwards so the direction and even the speed shouldn't technically be an issue. They slowed down the 1st launch backwards so obviousely there is something going on, and only we can speculate if the total 72 speed is now even reached (every time I go I keep forgetting my radar gun!! :))
Any thoughts?

It's my understanding that they have now begun working on the front spike as well.

I think that the back spike was having the problems and not the front because the back had 2 full(nearly) shots, versus the front only having one full shot. The others were 1/2 and 3/4. Maybe this makes no difference, and maybe it makes all the difference, but that was my observation of the ride.

Also could just have been bad steel on the rear spike or on the supports that didn't plague the front supports/tower. With both launches backwards almost going full back, it probably did irritate the rear towers more than going forwards fully once up the front tower.

The front spike was being worked on, possibly welded on wednesday. I didn't see anything being done to the back spike.

If there isn't anymore, there definitely was...many witnesses of that. The new welds on the front spike are obvious, but the work on the back spike, other than at 1:00 in the morning wasn't too evident.
