Why does Ohio and Indiana have tolls

After looking through my expeneses for my CP trip this past summer I noticed that I spent around $13.00 in tolls to drive the roads of Indiana and Ohio.  I was just curious as to why you wonderful Ohio'ns have to pay tolls to drive on a public raod?  Not upset just curious!  Here in Nebraska we pay high taxes on our cars so that is probably why we do not have tolls.
Tolls are used as a way to create revenue for the state from people passing thru the state.  Its just a way to insure that everyone that uses the roads pays for them is some way.

Thanks for your $$ !

mf laps = 100! No More No Less!!
Wheres the Electricity!

Many states have at least one toll road.  The money is used to pay for construction and maintenance OF the roads (in theory, anyway -- the PA and Ohio turnpikes are certainly always under construction somewhere ;) )

Please, we have one toll road in Ohio. I'd encourage you to drive anywhere north of Baltimore and get back to me about tolls.

try driving almost anywhere in Illinois sometime...the tolls come every 5 miles or so and they are between 40 and 50 cents each. it costs me about 3.00 each way to go to SFGAM. it costs me 4.00 each way to drive to CP, toll-wise...

AND in IN/OH  there are no long lines of cars all trying to merge back into three lanes from 6 or 8 toll booths. i PREFER the Indiana/Ohio way of doing it... call me crazy, but  once you've driven I- 294 in Illinois, you know what the meaning of chaos really is...

Also in Illinois If you don't have quarters with you it's its more like Michigan Adventure's Chaos instead of plain old chaos.

"MF has broken down and still hasn't been fixed, consider kicking Joe out of the park"

Down here in Florida there are tolls everywhere.  I think it now costs of $25 to drive the length of the turnpike.  On the Sawgrass Expressway it is possible that you would drive 1 exit (a couple of miles) and it would cost .75 cents!

I think you get your money's worth on the Ohio turnpike b/c they keep it plowed in the winter and it is usually in good shape (barring any yellow barricades)!

and on the Ohio turnpike you get REALLY nice rest areas with food AND gas...you only get a few of those in Illinois and then they are still pretty cruddy...

and Joe E...LOL at you!! you really hit it on the head with THAT one!! and here in Illinois, if you drop a quarter on the ground at a toll booth, it belongs to the State and you CANT pick it up!! you gotta throw another one into the toll basket!!

probaly why i use a lot of pennies...

Just to be clear. The Ohio Turnpike has TOLLS to pay for the TURNPIKE ONLY. All the tolls where used to pay off the cost of the road which actually happened in the early 90's(?). But we still pay a toll for the maintence and upkeep and continued improvements of the road. It isn't that expensive and it is a great road.
Remember also that the Ohio Turnpike takes a great beating from heavy truck traffic--they pay even higher tolls, so they're pulling their fare share (pun intended) as well.  The combination of rough winters and lots of truck traffic does beat down the road, and it needs constant repair.  Also remember that a 3-rd lane (in both directions) is presently being added to the Turnpike from Toledo to the east end.
While I, too, complain about the cost of the tolls, the turnpike commission does an excellent job of keeping that road clean and passable in the winter.

I've never had a problem with the Turnpike. I use it to visit the park, 70 cents each way. Try driving north of Baltimore and into New Jersey and PA. That's where the insane tolls come in.
