Hi all, my son is not a daredevil but I'm still proud of all the rides he has tried so far (he's 6 1/2). By the end of the summer, I'd like him to take the next step up from the mine ride and attempt either the Blue Streak or the Iron Dragon. He's game for either, but I was wondering which you think is less scary for that age set. I'm guessing the blue streak may be longer which could be an issue if the first hill is overwhelming, but then the iron dragon hangs down which is a whole other type of fear. Any insight?
Thanks!
Iron Dragon would probably be better for him. Blue Streak kind of has a wild side to it if you ask me. I would definitely do both, but IMO, Iron Dragon is the least scary of the 2
Iron Dragon would definately be a smoother ride and there isnt any clicking noises or climb to start the ride immediately. Also, there would be more younger kids on Iron Dragon than adults so that may help when he sees more kids his own age and make it a little less intimidating.
Iron Dragon is a much milder experience. Blue Streak packs a pretty good punch with lots of airtime. Most young kids really enjoy Iron Dragon and your son probably would also.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.
My daughter loves Iron Dragon and rode Blue Streak once and will never ride it again. ID is a much milder experience.
Iron dragon definitely. Blue Streak may have a little to much air time for him. (Not that this is bad but it may terrify him.)
Well that settles it, Iron Dragon it is :) Thank you everyone, I appreciate all of the tips, and great point about more younger kids on that ride, it will help him to see that. I remember my mom dragging me on the cork screw as my first roller coaster and the fact that it went upside down scared me to death. It took me 10 years to go on a coaster again and now I love them all.
I forgot about the air time on blue streak, I remember standing up on that in grade school although I think they only had seat belts or a high bar back then.
Thanks again!!
I would definitely suggest Iron Dragon. My niece was about your son's age last summer, and on our family trip, she enjoyed Iron Dragon. She wasn't tall enough for Blue Streak, and at first, Just getting her on Iron Dragon was a challenge. Once on it though, she loved it. I know she will probably beg to ride it this year!
I am hoping this year that if tall enough, she will be willing to ride the Mine Ride, and maybe one or two larger coasters.
Unfortunately, this is where Cedar Point lacks (rides that parents and children can enjoy together). Lots of small rides for the children, and lots of big rides for adults and older children. Only a small selection of rides everyone can enjoy together!
With Disaster Transport gone, I would love to see something like a Vekoma Jr suspended coaster, or a junior wooden coaster. Of 16 coasters, only three have height requirements under 48". I hope Rob Decker has something up his sleeve when it comes to families for 2014!

I would have to agree. Iron Dragon used to be my favorite roller coaster when I was younger. It's calmer than the Blue Streak.
My daughter is 5 and is chomping at the bit to go on the big coasters. She's only 43 inches though. It's honestly why I probably won't get to the park this year, it's a miserable place for her.
I'd say Iron Dragon would be "easier"

liebevision- My son was 5 last year and finally made the 48 in mark. As I said earlier, he's not a daredevil but the only additional rides that height mark made open to him particularly were the swings, ocean motion, cedar downs and the mine ride. He still LOVES all of the rides at Camp Snoopy and I bet we'll still ride many of them this year. There are a lot of options in 2 areas of the park for Camp Snoopy- just wanted to mention it :)
Well, I was in this situation about ten years ago, and for some reason, I still remember pretty well.
Back when I was around that age, I rotated around Gemini, Mine Ride, Woodstock Express, Blue Streak, Iron Dragon, and the Disaster Transport.
If he'll ride the Mine Ride, he'll ride the Iron Dragon.

2. Maverick
3. Top Thrill Dragster
As a person who's first cp memory was riding Iron Dragon and Blue Streak when I was 7, I would say Iron Dragon was definitely my favorite at the time.
When my nephew was 6 or 7 and just made it at 48" he asked to go on the Blue Streak so I took him. He thought he was going to fall out and die. Thirty years later he still won't forgive me for taking him on Blue Streak. He rides all the coasters today, but still reminds me I "tried to kill him." Memories that last a lifetime are made at Cedar Point.
I rode the Blue Streak for the first time when I was 7. To this day it's my favorite ride. In airtime, it's comparable with Magnum. The thing with Blue Streak is it's not very tall(only 80 ft tall) but it's really fast(hits 50 mph regularly, I used a radar gun to measure the exact speed last year) In overall Intensity it is a lot like Gemini. I don't recommend Blue Streak until at least 9 or 10. Blue Streak is rough, fast, hilly, classic woody. I recommend Iron Dragon or CCMR.
My daughter rode BS when she reached 48", at age 5, and had not the slightest problem with it. On the other hand, by that point she already had scores of coaster credits, including Space Mountain at Disneyland, so it wasn't much of a jump.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to post your insight. We just got home from the park and my son LOVED the Iron Dragon :) We started our day with a few Camp Snoopy rides, then rode the Mine Ride and Woodstock Express a few times to get his feet wet. Finally he got up the courage to try it out and he absolutely loved it. After the initial drop, I pointed out the "green swamp" that we rode over (which by the way, I hadn't ridden this ride in awhile and the water below after the first drop is pretty disgusting). The only bad part was he wasn't used to the over the shoulder harness so he said his stomach hurt after. He wanted to try it again later in the day but we were near the car at the other end of the park. On the way home he fell asleep and literally was talking in his sleep saying "iron dragon" hahahahaa He told me it's his favorite ride now and he wants to try the Blue Streak. Yay I created a little roller coaster loving monster :)
When I was a young boy, being pushed by my parents around the park, a guy came up to me (I forget if he was an employee or not) and gave me a purple stuffed bear that he won. Later that day I was forced onto iron dragon (barely being tall enough and the biggest ride I had been on before being Woodstock Express). I loved it so much I decided to name the bear Purple Dragon. (Get it, the bear was PURPLE and I loved the Iron DRAGON). That is the time that began my love for roller coasters, and more importantly,CP.
