I am planning my first ever trip to cedar point this weekend 15th-17th. The weather forecast does not look too good, but I have to take my chances at this point. Would be a disaster if TTD was down. When exactly does it shut down due to weather and is the weather in Ohio pretty static? In other words, when it rains does it just rain for hours on end or could it rain a bit and then clear up? Do they open TTD intermittently? Somebody please give me a good guess as to whether it will be open this weekend. Thanks.
If the weather forecast holds true, I would expect the major rides to be down from time to time. Weather is a big part of crowd size, see the FAQ.
(But Fridays & Sundays in OCT are usually light...:)

so how likely is it that down from time to time could devolve into down all the time? just really unsure of the weather patterns there and wish the forecast looked a little better
I went last month, and the forecast was cold, cloudy, and rain all day. The morning drive there looked like the forecast would be right, but once we parked and got the hotel all situated, the clouds parted and the sun was shining. It turned out to be a perfect two days, no clouds really, the temperature was 70's, and no rain at all. So, I guess what I'm saying is you never know until you actually go. As for the rides being down in what conditions, I haven't personally been in that kind of condition. The only ride that's been down due to weather-when I've been to CP-was the Sky Ride, and it was a little windy.

Smoking Marijuana isn't a bad thing or even a good one, like everything else, its what you make of it.
When I was there in late Aug. It was a perfect day intel the rain came. We went back to the Breakers Express and changed cloths and then headed back to the park. To what I saw Top Thrill Dragster was not running even know the rain had stoped. But after the rain the croweds very light. TTD had a line of 25 to 30 min. We desided to get the front seat, it was 45 min wait. The tall major rides don't open up tell the weather has all cleared.
In my experience most rides will run in the rain, excluding Dragster. I've seen Dragster shut down due to weather, open, then shut down due to mechanical reasons all within a ten minute period so if you see it launching loaded trains get in line. They will open and close the ride all day if the rain is off and on. I can't recall what the wind speed has to be to shut it down. If I had to guess I'd say 30mph but maybe someone else here can help you out with the actual answer.

The ride op told me that it was 30mph winds at 420ft, and it wasn't windy at all at ground level. Most rides will run when it isn't pouring, with the exception of their two woodies. I have been lucky this year though. I have been there 16 times and it hasn't rained, so I don't know about TTD.
Let's go straight to the Merry-Go-Round!
The direction of wind determines if the ride goes down to. TTD is one of the only coasters that actually closes in a light rain shower. Click Here to see what kind of weather the rides at the park close too.

When i was there in May, a ride-op told me that if there was any rain at all, TTD shuts down until it clears up. *** Edited 10/13/2004 7:53:12 PM UTC by RACE4THESKY***

Would anyone like to get pelted with 120mph rain drops? Is it a mystery why rain will shut TTD down?
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.
"That, and the track/wheels ted to get slippery."
I was told that by an employee...what it has to do with the train launching, cresting, or braking...I don't know.

Yeah, the wheels hit the water and actually bump along on the track and damage/tear up the wheels. The track has to be more or less dry before they can run.
TTD shuts down when winds exceed 35mph.
Just thought I'd clear that up, since people are posting 30mph.

120 mph raindrops? oooch!!! Raindrops hurt enough at 93 mph. But that doesn't mean it's not worth doing (repeatedly)
I'm used to raindrops going 93mph and would love to try it at 120mph. ;)

If TTD is down due to weather, it's likely that MF is still running. They usually run it in light and moderate rain.
I actually made it! My first trip to Cedar Point was last weekend. Friday night on the drive from the airport it was raining pretty good. That didn't stopus from riding Millenium Force Friday night (painful). TTD was obviously closed that night. Saturday it was pretty windy. The weather forecast had winds ranging from 17-23 mph.... that obviously translated to more than 35 mph at 420 feet so it was shut down again. We were flying out Sunday afternoon and were just hoping to get at least one ride on TTD before we left. As we lined up just before 9 they were doing the mandatory test runs. We got in line at the ride and the wind picked back up so they shut down. About 11 they started back up (2 roll backs on the train that we should have been on had we stayed in line). Then they had to make a minor mechanical repair and fianlly the gates opened up again. Got in 2 rides before we had to take off. Outstanding.
As to weather, there are computer controls that shut the ride down if winds gust over 35 mph at the top. It seems like that translated to 20-25 mph winds on the ground. That's what I would look for in the weather forecast.
Speaking of rain (and not feeling the need to start a new topic) I was there last night (Saturday 10/23) and when they opened TTD about 10 minutes to 12, I looked into the station and saw that there was a whole brute force of maintanence hauling the cars through the unload platform into the loading station. I found this to be really odd because I could see the tires still worked. It then clicked in my brain that the tires were so wet from the rain, they were too slippery to move the trains. Has anyone else seen this before?
Right now Dragster is not open. Its a perfect day out, and the website says its scheduled to be in operation. Do you think this is because of the strong winds today?
Well, here in northern Indiana this morning we had gusts near 50 or so mph, so id have to guess yes.
Even saw a small plane abort a landing at the local airport here, scared me watching it try from the ground, lol.
And about the wet wheels in the unload area, do you think they will build a shelter over that area soon?
Saturday the 22nd at the 11:57 pm restart after rain i know they pushed the trains a while too, so its obvious they expect it.
