Does anyone know when the Sandusky schools get out for the summer. I'm wondering once schools are out, if that greatly affects the crowds. We live in New York state and are trying to decide when to go. We were thinking either towards the end of May or sometime in June but I know there's mayflies and some other kind of bugs around that time and I'm not sure exactly when that starts and ends. If anyone can help me figure out when would be the best time to go, it would be very helpful. Those are the two things I'm most concerned about is the crowds and the bugs. We plan on going during the week. Thanks.

To follow up RCMAC's post, the last day for the Catholic school students in Sandusky is May 31st. So if you consider that there are dozens if not hundreds of schools within a reasonable driving distance to Sandusky - just across northern Ohio from Cleveland to Toledo and down into central Ohio to the Columbus suburbs, you are going to have a wide range of "last day of school/first day of summer" dates. RCMAC makes another good point. Locals do not spend every in season waking hour at the park. Although it's been six months since the park closed by the time opening day rolls around and many enthusiasts are chomping at the bit to get back as soon as possible, part of the benefit to living in Sandusky is that you can go to the park basically whenever you want. So it isn't necessarily the goal of every school kid to go on the very first day or two of summer.
Realistically speaking, if you are going during the week in May or June, you probably won't encounter any tremendous crowds and schools being in or out won't have a noticeable impact on that.
Likewise with the bugs - it is literally hit or miss. If you are in the front seat of MF or TTD, there is definitely more hit than miss. ;-)
A quick google search for Sandusky Schools 2017-2018 Calendar shows the last day of school to be June 7.
Something tells me that if every Sandusky school student turned up at Cedar Point on the same day it would add about 3,500 people to the park.
I also know that the locals spend a lot less time at Cedar Point than some of you might think.
I usually find the time right after the school year is over to be less busy than some science days, which kind of makes sense. But I lucked out one spring and attended the park on a Science day when only a few groups were booked, which made for a very uncrowded day.
So ya never know, but anymore it’s hard to gauge crowd conditions simply by whether school is in or out.
If you’re looking to avoid the crowds while school is in: you won’t. There are many busses from school trips through the opening month and also math & science week, and lebron James kids day.
The plus side is they’re generally gone around 3pm, but it’s also early closing for the park as well.
It’s better to go when the park stays open later then to try and avoid school kids.
Mayflies or mufflheads can come anywhere from mid-June to early July. If they come in while you’re at the park, it’s done your night is over.
The schools in this area (Sandusky and the surrounding counties) get out anywhere from May 25 to June 8. But that will have little or no affect on attendance. Since they live close they can go to the park almost anytime and are in no hurry. As for the mayflies and mufflleheads or midgies, they don't use calendars and come whenever they are ready.
