What's the latest news on Mean Streak?

What I am asking since I haven't heard any new news for a long time is: Is CP planning to retrack the ride using Intamin's wood technology which I think make it easier to run it without midcourse brake?

The midcourse brake that I think you're speaking of is part of a block, so that brake is sorta necessary.

The whole Intamin thing was a rumor/suggestion that people wanted to see. Don't count on it happening..

All the retracking in the world isn't going to "fix" the ride. According to a real bona fide wood coaster engineer I know, the problem is a much bigger one that would involve reprofiling a somewhat inadequate structure.

Inadequate, yet once of the most beautiful structures on the peninsula. It's too bad...I want to ride it the way it was meant to be, with no brakes, fast, laterals, a touch of air, and mean. I never got to ride it when it was brand new, and when I watch the original POV of it, I'm just amazed at the speed and smoothness of the ride. If they did reprofile it, I really think it could run with some of the best. It's a pity it wasn't engineered right.

Ahh. I still remember my first ride on MS the year it opened. Now that was a truly mean ride.

Wasn't there a bit of reprofiling done at the end of the ride? And I don't mean adding the little brushes to the side of the platform after the guy had his hand almost severed. I heard something about a reprofile that was done somewhere, but I don't remember what or even if it actually happened.

In its second or third year, there was some reprofiling done; that's also when the first-drop brakes were installed. If I remember correctly, I believe John Pierce was involved. He wanted to raise the bottom of the first drop, but CP wouldn't let him do that. But the changes that were made involved attempting to fix the banking at the top of the second hill, where track gauge and bank angle had both been problems. Then the top of the third hill was chopped down a bit, probably to make up for the loss of momentum caused by the brake on the first drop.

A number of years later, the additional vertical bracing was added between the track ties on the first drop and elsewhere on the ride; also the steel reinforcing plates were added to many of the ledgers.

VertiGo Rides - 82 Farewell my good friend..

Guess we will find out in about 7 days.

"All Your Base Are Belongs To Puglsy."

I think I've finially become a realist and realized that the thing will never be the same as it was the first year

It was running pretty well yesterday. It wasn't screaching and the mid course was barely hitting. I don't think the first drop brakes were on either. Maybe we will be in for a treat this year. Who knows.

I do know the thing was awesome when it was new or at least it was when I was 11. The first year, standing in the center of that thing, waiting in line, I was just in awe.

Welcome back Magnum riders how was your ride?

A couple times last year the first drop's brakes weren't on and the ride was great. I was surprised that the brakes were off and I didn't even realize it at first. We rode it a few more times that day. Those were some of the best rides on Mean Streak that I've had in a few years. Hopefully there will be a few days this year where they don't use the brakes on the first drop.

Umm, excuse me for not paying attention that much on MS but what made the ride change after the first couple years that made it necessary to add the first drop brake as well as the other features Ride Man mentioned? First time I rode it was in '94, so I guess I missed MS at its best?

Magnum will always be #1

I did ride my favorite coaster a few times last year with the trims off, or on low last year, and the train just flew down the hill. It's the best ride in the park for me, and I hope they don't change it, let alone destroy it...like all these new rumors keep saying...

If you're like me and you think Cedar Point should get the B/M Flyer in 2004, give me a "Hell Yeah!"

When I rode Mean Streak in 1991 I was disappointed in the first drop even without the brakes and the ride being tamer than the Texas Giant which I rode a year before but the 3rd drop was good in the back and I think there was one other drop that worked a little bit but I was let down after riding the Texas Giant a year before. I remember talking to Dave Jackson (FormerACE Coaster Hotline director) a lot during its construction saying that the builders told him that people will be shocked at the intensity of the ride so I was expected a very wild ride compable to the Texas Giant. The only noticable difference I see when I tried it last August was that the track was much rougher other than that I thought the ride was pretty much the same with the exception that the airtime was removed from the 3rd drop. The block brake was on heavy even before when it had only one train operating which was just before the first Coastermania for Mean Streak because the other trains haven't came in. Maybe the ride improved greatly during the first season. That is possible!

Well if they were testing it yesterday a majority of the rides would have the mid-course open considering you would be sending empty trains.

I remember being in the park the night a few years back when the red train didn't make it up to the mid course and the train was partially loaded.
