Phantoms drop was 225 ft hight 160 ft its now 228 ft and they removed the loops and the horse collars. the hight is still the same
Indeed confirmed, the Steel Phantom of Kennywood Park, West Mifflin, PA was built to attract those from Cedar Point to try something different.
When built, it beat several records, including the unique second drop down the ravine and the speed of 82 MPH at the time.
I miss it, but you can still ride it, at the Carnegie Science Center sportsworks in the simulator.

Indy's back and just in time.
The tallest coaster in the world after Magnum was Desperado. Magnum held the "tallest coaster" record for several years.
looks like Phantom broke the record first. It opened in 1991. While the hill is 160'. The actual drop is 225'.
This from RCDB:
Originally built by Arrow Dynamics and called the Steel Phantom. During the 2000-2001 off-season Morgan was brought in to make some modifications:
* The original 4 loops were removed.
* The height remained the same as the lift hill was unchanged.
* The drop increased from 225' to 228' feet.
* The length was increased from 3000' to 3200'.
* The original ride time was 2:15.
* The trains were modified removing the over the shoulder restraints.
However, if you want to talk about lift hill height, then Desperado at Wild Bill's Casino broke the record first.
Desperado opened in 1994 at 209' feet with a 225' drop. Steel Phantom opened in 1991 at 160' feet with a 228' drop.
Would you count SP being taller than Magnum? It isn't higher, its drop just is longer.

i'm not sure which one opened first, but Pepsi Max Big One opened the same year as Desperado. the Big One is 213' tall. although its drop is 20' shorter than Desperado, it is taller.
again, i'm not sure which one opened first that year.
Well you have height and you have length of first drop. Take your pick. ;) Since its been brought up, lemme give a little love to Desperado. What a beast! We loved it. *** Edited 7/12/2006 7:16:20 PM UTC by macho nachos***

I think the drop is what counts....I could build a coaster with a lift over a ravine that is 3000 feet deep but if the drop is only 100 feet long, who cares?

Pepsi max took it from desperado shortly after Desperado opened. Do a wikipedia search for King da ka then u can see all the coasters that preceded and for smaller ones which ones succeeded it. They go by height not drop. Try an rcdb search.

WOW!! I rode Desperado a couple years after it opened and I couldn't stand it. I was so happy we had Magnum after I rode that thing.

It may be 415 ft, however it "only" goes up 380 something. So its drop is 380 something.
