I was wondering what happens to the catch car during a rollback because doesn't it start to reverse toward the next car waiting to be launched. Does the train that is rolling back just pass over the catch car no problem???

You know, I would like to that as well.
I've always guessed that it's out of the range in which the train needs in order to fully stop.
But that would mean that the catch car would have to start its journey back almost as soon as it is stopped....and at a fast pace too.

I think it's been covered that the piece that engages with the catch car comes up after launch. It's late, and I don't remember specifics tonight, but I would assume if it rolls back it'll roll right over the catch car.
Although I know there was a problem in I believe it was 2004 where excessive rollbacks were beating the snot out of the catch car.
Right before you launch you hear a clank, that is the launch pin dropping into the catch car. It is held up by an electromagnet. In the staging area you will see 2 copper paddles. They have electricity flow through them which disables the magnet and allows the pin to drop. When the train launches the only thing that keeps the pin down is the friction between the catch car and the pin. Once the catch car slows down the pin slides right out of the catch car and out of the train, so when it rolls back it just glides right over the train.

In the first season, I had thought that they were having trouble because when the train rolled back, it would slam into the catch car going 120 mph, and that really battered it up. I also recall that they overhauled the catch car to protect it from that kind of impact, and also, heat. (Although when you look down the launch, you can still see heat waves rising from the catch car.
rolo strikes again
For this offseason or the last I can't remeber they replaced the catch car. It is now red it used to be white. The new one is equipped with better heat magnets.
I guess I made a mistake when I looked at the construction pics the catch car was red. But I swear it was white last year, maybe someone can help me out.
