Wave Swinger

Sorry if this has been brought up within another thread, but I saw this morning, on Screamscape, that the Wave Swinger has been completely dismantled. They show four photos of it from last week coming down. Seems odd to be doing severe maintenance on it at the start of the season. Did I miss something...are its days numbered?

When I saw it yesterday, it looks like they are in the process of reassembling it.

In fact, in light of the report on Screamscape, I sent in a couple of photos I took yesterday. At 2pm, the upper sweep assembly was together and the canvas was in place on top. By 6pm, the outer rounding boards and lights had been installed. I never saw anybody working on it, but at the end of the day it was more together than it was early in the day. :)

I have a friend who is there today with her school she works at. She sent me a picture. It looks to be back to the way it looked on Monday last week.

I wonder it had a major hydraulic failure of some kind and they figured a complete re-build was in order at this point. Just a guess....

Thanks for the updates gang. Very unusual to have a ride in limbo/repair like this to start the season at Cedar Point. It's truly a classic and beautiful ride for any park.

I asked the guys working on it on Friday and there was a part/piece in the center axis that had to be re-tooled as it had busted. That is why they had to dismantle it.
Hope that clears things up.

Hmmm...wonder if they broke the shear pin...that would qualify as a "busted" part in the ride center that might require dismantling to get at it...

If I'm correct in assuming the shear pin is a sacrificial component, wouldn't they have made replacing it somewhat easier?

As a 4th year engineering student that is so true.

As an 8th year engineer, that is absolutely not true. :)

Most of our biggest challenges don't come from making a design that works, but rather a design that works that is also serviceable and foolproof. The latter is, of course, much more difficult than the former.

As a Product Designer in the Rail-Road industry, for over 25 years, sorry, not really an engineer-college wasn't for me, the product just has to work, for at least through the warranty, then it can break down, and we don't really care how hard it is to fix, its past warranty. :)

You missed your calling PB-Reader. If I didn't know better I'd say you engineered every car I've ever owned.

Well, we try to design it to be easy to assemble, and work longer, but in special cases it really isn't possible, so you use what works. And many times it really isn't that easy to fix. - :(

Ya. I just rode it yesterday. Probally an internal problem that could only be fixed by complete dismantle.
