VertiGo

Now, I heard in 2001 or 2002 ,Cedar Point got a new ride called Vertigo. What ever happened to it?

I never got the chance to ride it. Not that I would have. Riders sat in a carrige similar to the PT carrige and were propelled up by big rubber bands, supported by 3 big poles (towers). It was a pay ride, located in Challenge Park, near RipCord. One of the towers fell over during the first off season.

This is a VERY BASIC description of the ride and it did have other elements (spinning, turning, etc). Maybe someone else who actually rode it can fill you in. I'm sure comparing the carrige to PT will head flames my way. It was certainly not that sophisticated!

2001 It was a addition to Challenge Park late in the season, August if I remember correctly. At the time I didn't have a drivers license nor could I get anyone to take me there. I figured that I would just ride it the next year when I'd be able to drive there myself.

Wrong, In January 2002 one of the towers fell over due to vortex shredding because of the storage procedures. There were three towers with cables that came from the top to a 6 passenger cart. The problem was the tubes were freestanding so the wind caused a powerful viberation. At the time, the ride was in the off season storage state so the cracks that formed went unoticed untill the tower fell.

Many other members have rode it, some got quite a few rides on it.

It was the single most unremarkable ride of its height I've ever been on. Interesting to look at, boring as hell to ride.

What time does the water show start?

"boring as hell to ride"

What did you ride Jeff the hot rocket.

The big bang was insane. I love the ride becasue it FELT so wrong and unsafe. I got a dozen rides on it.

I agree with Dan. That ride was awesome. I have never feared a ride like I did that one. It certainly felt unsafe, especially when you flipped forward in your seat and hoped that the harness held you. And when it did, it was all fun! I miss that thing. I had the pleasure of riding it twice.
I found it a bit of a letdown.

The problem I had with it was that it flung you like 300 feet up, but the descent was slow and controled. I remember flipping over at the top and staring straight down, but then no free fall.

Opened AUgust 12th, 2001.. and it didn't use "rubber bands".. it used compressed air..

I rode it a few times.. :)

It was pretty boring. You barely even notice the height once you're up there.

I rode it a few times, as well. It was Ok, but nothing spectacular -- I enjoy Slingshots far more.

I don't know where else to put this, but on a trip down to texas, I was driving through oklahoma city, i think it was on I-35 and my jaw dropped. What I saw was this tiny little park, it had a couple coasters, I have no idea what the name of it was. But IT HAS A VERTIGO. And it was in operation. I gave serious consideration to pulling off and riding it! It was north of the city, and right on the highway.

S&S improved on the original design and started marketing it again. It's not a suprise to me that they sold another one of these rides consitering the size.

I've stopped at a few small places such as that. From time to time the structrual intregrity of the rides make me a little nervous though.

That was probably Eruption, at Frontier City. That's actually a Six Flags-affiliated park (whether that makes you feel better or worse about the structural integrity of the rides is up to you ;) )
