US Highway 6 - feedback on road condition requested

I'm looking for feedback from anyone who has travelled on US Highway 6 between Chicago and Sandusky. We have taken several trips to Cedarpoint via the Interstates, however on our next trip, we've decided to go for more "scenic" routes.

If you've travelled any part of Hwy 6, please share your experience. I'd also like to know of any recommended hotel/motels and restaurants on Hwy 6 anywhere in Indiana.

Thanks.

Hey daniellowe,

I have not traveled 6 in IN, but have been down the OH reaches a bazillion times. It isn't anymore scenic in OH than the turnpike and I believe the turnpike is much safer. I routinely avoid 6 because of the crazy drivers and the safety record. There are some nice towns to explore, but if the scenic route is your quest, than I'd opt for the safer 4-lane turnpike and spend the time you saved exploring the scenery in Lake Erie's western basin instead. Just my opinion.

Enjoy, be safe and good luck!

this may or may not have to do with US 6 but when i was on Route 2 on my way home from CP, i was stopped for going 70 in a 55 mph zone. what was funny was that there was no traffic at all in sight and i had not seen one 55 mph speed limit sign after having been on a 65 mph road and i didn't even know i was going 70 mph at that point. i live in the metro detroit area and i have to go to court in port clinton, Oh to fight the case. take the turnpike. you wont have to deal with crap like this. ohio cops hate motorists from out-of-state.

It's posted quite well when it goes from 65 to 55. Sorry, but I doubt you'll win. :)

There is a section of Rt. 2, right where it drops from 65 to 55, where cops sit all the time. There is a rest stop right at the point where the speed drops, so if you miss the first sign or are coasting to your slower speed, you're likely to get nailed. Of course, it's painfully obvious they are targeting people who don't know the speed change in that area.

PS. I wouldn't mind knowing what Rt. 6 is like. Every now and then I pick up someone in Bowling Green and think about taking it, but always end up driving back up to Rt. 2 or the Turnpike instead.

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

Is that drop from 65 to 55 on the East or West side of Rt 2 compared to the park? I'm guessing it's on the West side...?

West where the freeway ends.

I usually get off of 75 at BG and take 6 to Sandusky. I don't mind it at all. So far this year, there has been no construction. Last year they had a couple of detours, and I used the turnpike instead.

I agree, Rte 6 from BG is an OK drive, but would only take it on a Sunday. For me and my precious cargo in the back seats, it's a safety thing and during the week espcially rush hour, 6 is mayhem at best. Too many accidents especially t-bones along that stretch to Fremont. Rte 2 is even worse than 6, at least in the 2 lane section east of Toledo to Camp Perry. Although 2 is pretty scenic with all the Lake Erie marshes, parks and refuges, but only on a Sunday if I could help it. Again, it's a safety thing IMO.
