TTD survives first storm

About 15 minutes ago, the 60 mile per hour winds at Cedar Point died down, and Top Thrill Dragster (as well as the other goliaths) can still be seen towering the Cedar Point skyline. The storm season has started just in time for the operating season. :-) Lookin' forward to getting about a mile closer so I can see how much this one sways!

I was eating at Damon's when the storm rolled in. I think a tornado warning was in effect, as a tornado was sighted south of Sandusky. Anyway, it was a hell of a storm! A huge tree was knocked down at Battery Park and the sky and water all blended together in a sea of gray. You couldn't even see the break wall at the marina, much less CP, during the worst of the storm.

Before the storm, I did get to see a full circuit launch of TTD! It surprised me that they were working on a holiday afternoon.

Florida may have Disneyworld and Key West,
but Ohio has Cedar Point and Put-In-Bay.
It's great to live in Ohio!

Pete that tornado as far as I know was in sandusky county. About 4 miles north of Tiffin. For you that don't know where that it is its about an hour south of Cedar Point

What about all those vicious winter storms? I hear the snow, wind and ice was wild at the Point this year.

Yeah, it was wild up here...we had 8 inches on Christmas day.

And they were right about the tornado warning, it was south, around Tiffin. I don't know what damage it did there but the winds downed some trees around Sandusky itself. Most everything is OK though.

i was watching the camera's when the storm came through the the other day...it definitly looked pretty crazy over there!! But i was just curious..since we are on the topic, does cp housing have evacuation drills and such when those really heavy storms hit, so we know what to do when a torando is in the area?

i was just wondering...would the rides hold up against a toronado if one ever hit CP?

Depends on the ride, and the severity of the tornado. An F-0 or F-1 would probably do some damage, especially to the woodies and high rides if it hit directly, but they probably wouldn't be beyond repair. Drop an F-4 or 5 on the park, and it's sayanora summer job.

If an F-5 Hit Cedarpoint your looking at total loss, anything above 50 feet will be aniilated. In that case cedarpoint would probably be closed for about 3 years if not that, people will still be dissapointed because cedarpoint would quckly become the kiddie-ride capitol of the world!

given it is ohio, an F5 tornado is unlikely. But, not impossible, look at the super destructive tornado that hit Xena ohio a while back.

TTD survived. The Power Tower webcam did not fare as well.

For the tornado damage I'm not sure what damage it did but i'm sure it contributed to Heidelberg College having totally no power after the storm hit.

I never thought about a tornado destroying CP, it would be bad though. I hope they have insurance. ;)

Why so many pessimistic people out there...im looking at the glass half-full. If an F-5 did occur and took out rides CP would come back even stronger . Lets not worry about F-5's and more about some new ride CP's opening this year that will be the best in the world! Maybe after we get off itll feel like weve been swept up and spit out of an F-5 tho!

Didn't the Mine Ride have to be rebuilt because of a tornado a long time ago?

Thats the good thing about CP being on a peninsula, An F-5 tornado or any tornado that starts up on land would not be able to get over the water, It would either die or turn into a water spout. Those arent very strong. The only way a tornado could really hit CP if it would start up on the peninsula, which is really not likely.

When I die, They'll read this And say a genius wrote it.

A tornado did hit the Point back in the 70's and took out a whole bunch of trees in the area that Gemini now occupies. It happened right before Gemini was built and the trees were destined to be torn down anyway.

Not to mention, they don't start out as F-5s. It wouldn't likely destroy the park. Damage, but not destroy.

Big D, water spouts can come on land and turn back into tornados, it may die down somewhat but not that much.

The dynamics a tornado needs to form or not usually at a place like cedarpoint, sure it is humid but with the lake breeze the convection is well, not right to make a tornado. There have been tornadoes on land and maybe at the point but they probably weren't very strong on the penninsula because it is seperate from land from everything but a bridge, the tornado would disipate before reaching the penninsula chances are.
