The Werewolf and the Raven King.

Once upon a time, on an island* in a lake
twisted beasts of wood and steel their dens and homes did make.
Goddess of the Millennium, Gryphon with golden wing
But this year, brand new, by old knight of Blue, rose up the Raven King.

Faster, higher, steeper, the Raven King did fly
outstripped by just the Goddess and the Racer of the Sky.
Twisting, looping, restless, he yearned to stretch his wings
Waiting, as all the others, for the gentle breath of Spring.

But near the waters another beast, he watched with jealous eyes
at the notion the Raven King would be the first to fly.
For all the beasts were restless, and this one, he was too
The once-insectoid creature who'd become the werewolf Rougarou.

So though all the other beasts should have stayed dormant in their berths
The yellow-eyed wolf creature, he snarled and howled and cursed.
'Why, just last year, I made 'em cheer, their brand new favorite thing,
why should I kowtow and wait on this so-called Raven King?'

'Hush, quiet!' the others hissed. 'Stop making such a fuss
the Raven King's a brand new thing, not like the rest of us!
Just up from the ground, he should fly around- we can afford to dawdle-
besides,' they said, 'you're not QUITE new, you're a floorless remodel.'

Rougarou, he snarled and growled and glared across the park
Furious beyond belief at the upstart little lark.
'Yes, spring will come soon enough and we will all be free
but this pithy upstart 'king of birds' gets to fly even before me!'

The snow will thaw, the warmth will come to this island on the lake
And will come thrill-seeking grownups and kids on their summer break.
The creatures there of steel and wood will deliver thrills and frights
and bring forth laughs and shrieks and screams of excitement and delight.

Our Goddess of the Millennium will plunge and swoop and fly
Our sleek and speedy Racer will send us screaming toward the sky
And our Raven King will give us a ride unlike we've ever seen-
but don't forget our Rougarou, lest he get MORE jealous and mean.

Sorry if writing coaster-based poetry is a little odd- I just happened to see a little joke in the 'Testing' thread involving Rougarou being grumpy about Valravn possibly testing before everything else and... well, inspiration struck. Enjoy.

I remember in HS making comics about halloweekends ending badly as werewolf canyon wolves came to life or monsters coming from the lake to terrorize guests. Sort of grim I guess but it was some of our halloween fun, and usually starred our friends.
