The Rotunda
There are many rooms around the rotunda at Hotel Breakers but they do not seem to be available to the general public. Considering the fact the these rooms have a great view and location , who gets to stay in these rooms and why are they not available to the public?

Not only are they rooms for employees, but you wouldn't want to stay in one regardless of the view. They don't have bathrooms (there is one down the hall) and they don't have carpeting.
What they do have are bunkbeds (which use to have Star Wars mattresses!) and almost 100 years of a musty funk. Oh yeah, no air conditioning either!

All of the rooms in the original Hotel Breakers were not unlike what the Rotunda rooms are like today. There were no bathrooms in each room, they shared like in a dormitory.
Originally, the hotel had well over 1,000 rooms. When society dictated the need for bathrooms, the rooms were converted into the design you see today in the Bon Air section.
Amenities like Air Conditioners and Television were late to come, I think the 70's if I'm not mistaken. All rooms were originally conceived for guests, not employees.
If I am not mistaken, they still house employees in the Rotunda and in the wing directly above main front entrance and hallway to the lobby.

Back in the 60's they had deluxe rooms, which were similar to what the Bon Air section is today. These had air conditioning and television. They also offered standard rooms, which had no air conditioning, but may have had televisions. I remember staying in the standard rooms as a young kid. The rooms were clean, but very hot on a summer night.
Other than the Rotunda rooms being small, if there were converted to guest rooms there would be a bigger problem. The American's with Disabilities Act would mandate than an elevator be installed so handicapped people could rent the rooms.
Where would you put an elevator that would not block other room views or destroy the originality of the Rotunda itself?
Rumor has it that employees would, at the end of the year, pile sheets and towels on the Rotunda floor until it reached the second or third floor...then jump from the fifth! Do not try this at home!

There are dorms next to the water tower for the girls, and the old Cedars Hotel by the marina is for the guys. Those are cheap, only $16.80 per week, but believe me, you get what you pay for. There are some better dorms at the end of the causway, and some apartments there too, all for employees. But the accommodations employees are in the hotel.

I suggest going up there one day. It is open to guests and a few of the top most rooms are used as observation points (the ones with no doors). It would take about two of those rooms to make a modern hotel room. One of the many stair cases could be transformed into a handicap ramp and there have been nights at a CP hotel I wished there was no Air Conditioning.
