The Radisson's Possible Expansion Project

After reading over the article, which can be found here, http://www.cedarfair.com/public/news/story.cfm?id=141, I am wondering what ya'll think about this. I for one think that this project will be very successful during the regular season, but will lack customers during the offseason due to it's location, Sandusky. However, I am only saying this based off of personal opinion and experience with other indoor water parks.

Example: When I travel to the Wisconsin Dells (about a 2 hour drive), many of the hotels in the area also have indoor water parks. Now, the water park would get me to stay at that hotel rather than another, but I don't go there just to stay at the hotel. Attractions in the surrounding area brought me there, and the water park in the hotel was just an added bonus.

Basically, there needs to be a bigger draw than just the water park, during the offseason that is.

I think that C.P. is trying to mimic the Great Bear Lodge and send some of that revenue their way. People do stay at the Great Bear Lodge throughout the winter months.

Great Bear Lodge is packed year round. There is another, larger indoor water park that will be opening in a year or two a little further south. The new complex is supposed to be huge.

I doubt winter occupancy will be an issue.

In my opinion this is a can't miss. There are still relatively few indoor vacation destinations in the greater Ohio area. This is a good bandwagon for CP to jump on.

I still like my idea of putting an indoor waterpark out by Camper Village and replacing Sandcastle but it is a pretty wild plan and not in Cedar Fair's conservative business style.

The Radisson gets some convention business during the winter though not as much as they would like. At this point that would be happy to break even in the offseason so any gains would be good gains.

I think it will bring more people in during May, September and October when the park is open, but Soak City is not.

I think this is a great idea.

Yes, Great Bear is packed year round. My girlfriend and I went during the winter just to get away and plan to go next year as well. I know I will definately switch to the Radisson once its ready.

Has anyone ever heard of Wheels Inn? If Cedar Point could get something like that going, people from everywhere would come. I mean Wheels Inn has 3 pools, bowling, miniture golf, laser tag and like 50 billion other things. They even have an indoor amusement park...

Ohio State, here I come!

I like competition! Great Bear will be changing their name to the "Ghost Town Lodge", LOL! They must be shakin' in their boots with this press release. My guess is that their days of charging $250+/night will come to an end if Radisson is modified.

It's interesting that Cedar Fair mentioned they'd be asking Sandusky for tax incentives. Coincidentally, I bet it will be a number exactly equal to the new parking tax... LOL! Cedar Fair is showing they still hold a few trump cards... Go get 'em Dick!

Hey, I heard a rumor that Millenium Force is sinking...

something tells me that Great Bear lodge is not shaking in their boots right now...yes, CP can offer competition, but there won't be any competition until the general public gets a taste of the Radisson...

I wouldn't be that quick to switch to another resort just because Cedar Fair owns it. Quite the contrary... I find CP resorts to be adequate but not places I consider top-notch. If the current resorts weren't on the peninsula, I'd never spend the money they ask for. The beds and furniture are cheap, and that to me negates the size of any room. I've noticed this across the board at Radisson, Breakers and even in the new Lighthouse Point cottages.

If they expand, I hope they buy better beds.

If Great Bear Lodge charges $250 a night, don't you think what Cedar Point will charge its guests for their new resort will be in the same ballpark? I certainly do!

I think this is a great idea. I figured something was up, as I went to the breakfast buffet at the Radisson Sun., and there were two guys outside measuring the building. I thought that they may be measuring for new siding.

I think CP will do this right, as Great Bear Lodge is pretty stiff competition. Great Bear is successful not just because of the water park, but because of the rustic theme of the lodge. CP will need to do some major theming and redesign to make this work. Not necessarily a rustic theme, but they need to add a lot of fun activities to the hotel, and expand the adult entertainment options as well.

Another good idea would be discount rates for CP season pass holders.Maybe just wishful thinking :)

Here's the question of the day, though:

Would combo passes allow admission to the waterpark?

Jeff,

I believe that a hotel must meet certain standards to keep the Radisson name. Those standards may be higher than those of Cedar Point's other hotels. That may include specifics on bedding and other amenities.

Don't quote me on that but I think there is some validity to it. When it comes to bedding though, half the people will like it and half won't. I know a lot of people who like a firm mattress and a lot of people who like a less firm mattress. Seeing as a mattress can't do both, someone is going to be disappointed.

Where is the Great Bear resort?

I don't know... I've been in a lot of dumpy Radisson's. I can't think of any other hotel chain I've stayed in that's so inconsistant.

Radisson ain't Westin, that's for sure. If you haven't stayed in one yet, do so. The Heavenly Bed rocks, as does the Heavenly Shower. They often have good weekend deals (since they are typically business hotels) that make for a very affordable romantic weekend away.

It's not war, famine, or pestilence; it's only downtime.

Is it called Cedar Creek Resort? Anyways, I think this is something Cedar Point should look into. They could offer a resort with golf, free shuttle service to Cedar Point, tennis, swimming, etc...

All of those things are already at Cedar Creek and it's only 5 minutes away. Why wouldn't they be interested?! Seems like a perfect place to get into the "resort" and "year-round" business.
