The Big Show..

I think it was cool they were showing this supposed great coaster "Steel Dragon" and then the show right after it had a real coaster "MIllennium Force" that has a better lift system, better cars...etc.
Rumor has it that "Making of a Coaster" was supposed to follow Millennium Force, but Intamin was not willing to participate.

I have my doubts as to the truth of that rumor (why follow the construction of the second-tallest coaster in the world?), but that's what I've heard.

I remember being in that kids place when I had to wait 3.5 hrs for MF. I believe that last year when I rode they only had 2 trains running though and the left over one had those water things in it.

2001 MF Count: 0
Favs:
1. Iron Dragon
2. Raptor
3. Gemini
4. Magnum
5. Demon Drop
I heard that too in late 99. And I too have my doubts because of the exact same reasons you say.

It may not of been the tallest and fastest...but it has some rather unique things about it that other coasters still do not have. The lift system, the custom track, the 80 degree drop, how your still going 65 mph into the breaks, having no trim breaks, and the magnetic brakes themselves. *** This post was edited by thrillman on 7/17/2001. ***

mf laps = 100! No More No Less!!
Wheres the Electricity!
I agree with the bunny hills. Steel Dragon 2K looked like an awesome ride, the bunny hills, everything (the 2nd hill right after recovering from the first is 260 feet!). It doesnt look as smooth as mf. I am sorry to say but to me sd2k looks like the better ride.
Well, the guy was right, I never thought about clean sheets before- but something tells me I'll remember the guy when drying off out of the pool now. So much stuff we take for granted....
Do you guys remember how on the 2nd MF POV (with the enthusiast), he stated the top speed is about 94 or 95 mph? Trying to beef it up a little bit... :)
Must fight urge to comment about voice-over person...

Who knows.. maybe he just forgot..

I am not a coaster expert to the point of memorzing layouts or having a ton of rides to my arsenal....BUT - SD2000 looks like a glorified Steel Force - to the tiniest details. The tunnels, the color, the turnaround all seem to just be nothing more than Steel Force cloned with higher hills......I dont find that interesting or original....the slope of the incline looks ridiculous being that long....quite unwieldley and does anyone know how long it must take to climb using a chain at that angle? Must be forever and a day.....

I am not a MF apologist - but to me the sleekness of the first hill and incline is pleasant and the layout is neat and clean. Sort of like the beast - kind of hidden in spots and you have to ride it to find out how it goes....I think that has a certain allure to a coaster.....

But, just an opinion. I have not and am unlikely to ride either.....
Back to the show, if the ordered copy of the show from the Discovery Channel has the section about P&D on it... please let us know... I would buy one just for that - it sounds really cool.

"Vote early and vote often"
I watched that show and the POV on SD2000 just didn't make the ride look all that great. It just seems slow paced and just not all that cool. You can turn around and watch a POV for MF and it's just fast and looks fun the whole way through-the person giving the POV is a lot more pumped coming into the brakes than Dana and Steve were too! I just think CP has a much better ride and I have no desire to ride SD.

On a side note, did Nagashima really have SD's crown put on right after MF opened to steal the record, cause if that's true that would be a pretty cold thing to do.

Trim brakes-a necessity???
Regarding the Crown being put on Steel Dragon right after MF opened:

When did the Crown get put on MF? Then couldn't CP say that is when MF became the world record instead of when it officially opened.

I know, I know, MF is still a great ride even if it isn't the tallest and fastest in the world. But that Coaster show made MF look like the Big Bad Wolf, and SD look like Little Red Riding Hood. They made CP look like THEY were the ones trying to spoil the world record, when really it was the other way around.

Oh well, I still love MF, and the Discover Channel show was great. I really liked the "behind the scenes" stuff.
When I worked at CP, it was not surprising to see Mr. Kinzel walking around the Park! He always seemed like the nicest man, he always waved to you and said hello. If I was him, I would be very proud of the show! How many other parks besides the parks in FL get an hour long show on the Discovery channel? The areial views though, does anyone think that was done by computer or satilite?
Combo of both.. looked like color and touched up b&w ariel pics...

I just spent a half hour on the phone trying to order the video. The lady kept on telling me it wasn't for sale. Then right before I hanged up she found out it was. I ordered it but she said it was on back order which means I might not get the tape for 4-6 weeks. She also said I might get it in a week. So who knows.

I agree with Chris above, Steel Dragon might be the fastest for a split second, but the overall ride look fairly slow, not to mention that brake. Has anyone ridden both?
Yes.. isn't it amazing what the search feature will do???

More on the show: Hooray for sweeps! I've been there, and it was nice to see them get some credit they so deserve. And they're not lying when they say sweeps walk 15+ miles/day - I used a pedometer for awhile just to see, and 15 was a short day!

While it was nice to see a lot of the footage (and boy do cameras make those dorms look A LOT nicer than reality, for all the 2 second shot we saw) and see the interesting facts, I was somewhat disappointed. It would have been nice to see some other coasters (MF is great and all, but I'd have given up the second part of the footage for some other rides/coasters) - I was especially surprised that they didn't mention the Blue Streak. And there was no mention of games! They could have done more with other departments as well (Merchandise, Reservations...). *Did anyone else notice Fike sitting in the Park Op office looking... Shall we say less than aware? ;)*

Good show overall, and two thumbs up to our resident Dan-The-Magnum-Man celebrity! :)
